Am I late to suggest Maria Pia's? It really is quite fabulous. Although I have yet to try Sweet Mama's Kitchen and it's probably better located.

Look: you could tell people that you returned to acting after your brain surgery. What could possibly be cooler than that?

Paranoid belief systems like the one behind EVP is just Gnosticism by another name
Do I get to plug Erik Davis' new book twice in the same thread? Joy!

Does Schopenhauer say anything about the stages of bullshit?
Incidentally (paging Emma Hart, paging Emma Hart) Schopenhauer wrote in 1830 a treatise on the art of trolling and of winning conversations that puts derailing for dummies to considerable shame. It ought to be read and discussed more.

Reverse speaking and EVP combined, have given me a glimpse into a part of the mind that was shut down thousands of years ago by an alien race who have been manipulating humanity ever since.
Bankers have been around for only six hundred years so there's a mistake right there.

Well what exactly is being offered as compensation in this case? an H?
The redress of cultural wrongs doesn't prevent a society from seeking to bring about more concrete change. If the PAS book club ever takes off, I'm going to suggest that Brian Friel's Translations be included, it deals with such things quite aptly.

Almost the entire English language consists of missspelt foreign words.
Okay, let's not get carried away here. We're talking about place names in a colonised country with a history of land confiscations and usurpation of sovereign rights. it's not quite the same thing as beef deriving from the French boeuf, wouldn't you say?
This is not a trifling issue blown out of all proportions - the political and psychological implications of the decision whether to restore or not the full integrity of an indigenous placename are significant.

then you could have Wangers/Whanganui...
That's a very sensible suggestion, let's put it to a referendum. Wangers doesn't sound half bad. It would also flow seamlessly with the capital's new name (if I get my way), Wellington/Schmellington.
And when do we get to rename the two islands? Currently they sound as if they had been named by the cat in the hat.

As for "embarrass", Giovanni reminded us quite well I thought that none of this is going to change Lhaws' mind or behaviour.
I think the point is rather how it plays out with the public. My probably wrong opinion is Otaki exchange = bad Madden-Smith exchange = good (from Lhaws' point of view, that is). But it will all be very moot indeed if W(h)anganui doesn't produce a credible candidate by the time of the next election.

Cecelia: since no doubt you didn't bait him the way that Madden-Smith did, I agree with Sacha - it's worth lodging a complaint about that.
