  • Hard News: Feminist as crazy old man,

Excluding boys is self-defeating. Living completely separately from men really isn't sustainable so surely educating the next generation is a useful step toward creating a better world.

Those stamps are gorgeous though, yeah, I can't see Ziggy condensing to stamp size nearly as well as pretty much any of the rest of Bowie's cover art - I'd probably plumb for Aladdin Sane.

I just don't want people on either side of the fence telling me I'm doing sex wrong.

Everyone sees the world through the filters of their own experience and it doesn't take any malice to overlook a group that needs to be included but, if we are decent, we should acknowledge our errors when they are pointed out to us and rectify wherever possible. Being unwilling to do that does indicate active prejudice.

Heaven forbid anyone do what is socially expected of them and only later realise that they actually can't learn to like it.

I hadn't seen David in a while, so I bowled up and gave him a hug.

"A hug!" he said. "Oh, er, well, yes ... I suppose so!"

He was quite brave about it, really.

For some reason I find this almost unbearably sweet.

  • Hard News: The Honours,

A big lot of what has also changed is our level of tolerance for stuff. Talk to women of my mother's generation and they all seem to have stories of the blokes that kids just knew never to be alone with. Every one knew that the village curate (for eg) ahd wandering hands you just didn't make a fuss and tried not to sit next to him at tea.

At various stages in my life and with various groups of people hugging has either been frequent and mandatory or completely taboo and I always find making the switch really confusing. I spend a lot of time doing that little dance where you shift your weight backwards and forwards trying to go in for a hug whist retaining the ability to back off without looking like you were trying anything.
