  • Hard News: Revival,

More seriously, you could look to the soldiers who came back from active service overseas while the war was still on, and who were told they would return overseas unless their wives were pregnant.

It was hushed up because, in effect, it was a bit of a mutiny. Men and women claimed pregnancy, and the men stayed home. Apparently, there were some verryyyyy loooooonnnnngggg pregnancies.

It probably didn't account for the whole baby boom, but certainly contributed. At least, I am told it did in my family:))

  • Hard News: A few (more) words on The Hobbit,

    Erm. This

    none would never

is rubbish. The result of changing a word earlier on. And not proof-reading. Ah well......Not the first, nor probably the last.

    G'night. Sweet dreams.

Ooh really? I don't know why he gave up, but maybe he needed a break. Always thought Calvin and Hobbes was such a well-conceived cartoon, but such innocent fun. And funny, like "laugh out loud" funny.

EDIT: Gosh you people are fast sometimes. I'm still Bill Wattersoning in response to Islander....

  • Hard News: A few (more) words on The Hobbit,

in fact the word that started my spelling comment was spelt correctly.

I probably owe you an apology, as I looked back and it was the grammar rather than the spelling. Sorry.....actually, couldn't find what started it, except for a certain Hollywood producer.

I always loved "Calvin and Hobbes". (My cat is named after Hobbes although he insists he's named after a philosopher. Bloody cats. Up themselves sometimes.)

Rather a good discussion on Mediawatch (mp3).

Hooray for something other than small "succinct" questions which demand a 'yes' or 'no' answer.

but the rhetoric has been disturbing not only because of it's vitriol, but because of the naivete of its implied narrative.

    Quite.

  • Hard News: A few (more) words on The Hobbit,

Hmm. Looked up Baker St/Gerry Rafferty because I've always liked it (Danielle too? From new thread) and found this, Sacha. From Reservoir Dogs.

    Will link work? Crossie fingers!

Mm, I was a bit surprised at the invective. Disappointed, actually - I think he missed the mark. Both he and Deborah (spelling? sorry Jeremy, I'm another old-fashioned person who thinks spelling and grammar are important) Coddington sounded off, each one adding (sigh) nothing but heat....
