The weird thing is, we're not that far off from being ok. We need to fix the centres and I'm not sure Toeava is the man to do it but when Conrad and Kahui are fit again... I'd like Roko and Hore gone. JoRo's time is up sadly and Hore, while still being a good footballer just can't do his core job. Mils has also been a great worry all season.
So we need a couple of guys back from injury and please please please let's see some of the younger talent brought in for the AIs. The time is exactly right for this looking ahead to 2011.

Armageddon's a party in your mouth though isn't it? Not sure I could manage more than a pint or two before the hops overpowered me :)

Enjoyed seeing everyone in the music section of Media7 last night. I just wish Russ had time to ask each of them for their favourite interview story. Grant's had his Billy Joel moment and several others and I'm sure the other guys have as well.

Peter we did on defence, it wasn't a lack of physicality that lost us the game... we certainly lost the lineouts but the scrums went our way I thought. Do you mean the ruck/mauls?
Yes, we gave the ball away something like 30 times in this match. I thought we were too often slow to the breakdown, or we were knocked off the ball at the breakdown.

What ever happened to the grubber? You know flat opposition defensive line quick ball to 2nd five (think Mauger) who taps ball ALONG THE GROUND ball goes end over end twice and pops up as if on a string either back into the arms of the kicker or one of the outside backs screaming through at pace who then goes over for a try,
Well, when you have a Mauger in your side or even better, a Mehrtens, Little and Bunce backline, that's a real option. When you have a Donald, Nonu pairing, not so much...

A couple of things I found most inexplicable about Sunday's game;
1. Physicality. We had our arses kicked by an extremely physical Boks side. With guys like Hore, Woodcock, Thorn, Rodney and Richie in the side I would've thought we'd stand up better. We looked lightweight.
2. Leadership. Headless chooks, again surprising with Mils, Rodney, Thorn in the side. Sad to see Richie all but trying to win games on his own.
I thought the ref made 2-3 pretty costly mistakes against us. The Ross yellow was ridiculous as everyone and their dog could see that that ball was out.
I deserve a medal because I watched the match on Prime already knowing the score.

Today the God Of Fuck is merely the Petty Officer Of Fucking About; the Local Ombudsman Of Mildly Irritating Behaviour...
Now that's entertaining music writing! Although surely Manson being a dork doesn't exactly qualify as breaking news.

Thanks for your help in tracking down Smithies, Pete. He and the family are staying an extra day up here so he can do the show.
Heh, excellent news! I look forward to it.

Doh! Missed all the music chat.
Re FFD. I find it best not to consider them reggae at all. I like them best in gentle skank mode, or as souful dubby house ala the Big BW album, that works well, reminiscent of your Berlin folks such as Noiseshaper or Boozoo Bajou. But reggae? Nah.
One of the things I like about the Wellydub sound is that it is all about the fun in a soul style, no intellectualism to it at all which is a quite nice change for NZ music. We take our musicians far too seriously.
I'm pretty addicted to Wax Poetics these days, mostly dealing with all sorts of obscure rhythmic stuff in an obsessive way that makes me all hot and bothered.
Word up. Wax Poetics is a great read and a keeper. Urb magazine ain't too bad either. Fairly hiphop-centric though.

Grant Smithies is the best music writer in the country I reckon. And not just because he likes what I like, hates what I hate, and is a mate :)
It's a shame he's being watered down into writing a load of general feature stuff for the SST, although I'm sure he'd have a different opinion on the matter.
Re the NME, I haven't seen it in print form for years and the online version is, well, difficult.
