  • Island Life: Symptoms persist,

I don't think cocaine works as a nasal *de*congestant, somehow...

But it does have the benefit of not to making you drowsy... quite the opposite I've been lead to believe.

  • Island Life: Symptoms persist,

A range of generic ibuprofen, paracetamol and Asprin tablets stocked in some pharmacies and supermarkets is Paracare or something like that? I believe they also make a liquid paracetamol for children.

Not as cheap as it should be (the supermarket own brands have the pills cheaper) but not as expensive as the "name" brands...

  • Hard News: Stop the Enabling,

I'm not sure I agree. It's hard to see how anyone could argue punching a child in the face was reasonable force.

I too, cant see how punching a child in the face could be "reasonable force", allowing a non-conviction under previous law.... so I'd hope this wasnt a precedent setter...

But, but, but.... all through this campaign we've heard of earlier terrible terrible things that were in fact not cause for conviction because force that does not seem reasonable to most of us was found to be reasonable by a jury. riding crops, folded electrical cord, planks of wood..... none of them merely a "smack" in my understanding.

So, on those grounds, I'm less convinced that he would definitely have been found guilty under the previous law. might have been, but not definitely.

  • Up Front: Are We There Yet?,

What is marriage? For us it was just about getting all our favourite people together, making a promise in front of them, and then celebrating the occassion.

Yeah, that's pretty much how I feel about it too... CU werent available when my wife and I got hitched, but it would have been perfectly acceptable to me... I'm not so convinced I could have sold it to some in her family though? And its this fact that some people do perceive marriage and civil union as not the same that affirms my belief that same sex marriage should be available for those who want it.

    but...

So while I keep my "marriage = meh" attitude I don't get any serving platters or salad tongs or money towards overseas trips. Total gip.

Total gip except for the fact that the wedding and reception typically costs more to put on than the value of the gifts received... :) (but thats not why you do it)

While we're vaguely on the subject, can anyone tell me why I can't legally marry my father-in-law?

That's easy.... because you are already married :)

  • Hard News: Put on the full armour of God,

"I wonder what's worse: a defense secretary who puts Old Testament quotes on progress updates on an invasion of a Muslim country or a defense secretary who thinks this will add to his president's knowledge and expertise."

Perhaps a President that was in fact influenced by those statements... is worse than whatever prompted them to be inserted?

  • Hard News: Some Week,

Waterview is a local issue being thrown out over the national news. It only affects people that drive around Auckland. Transmission Gully has some actual national interest, if you ever want to get around the country, particularly from one end to the other without a plane.

Er... while the alignment of, and construction details of the waterview connection of SH20 are indeed only a local issue... Surely, the completion of the western ring route... (of which it's the only un-started part) which provides an alternative to going through the CBD for anyone bypassing Auckland, has EXACTLY as much national importance as Transmission Gully... which achieves much the same thing... an alternative route on a heavily used and frequently blocked SH1, no?

  • Speaker: Economics of the Waterview Tunnel,

I guess it just shows that the "tunnel can't be widened" argument wasn't really valid either.

This is a conclusion I was coming to, too..

The prsentation linked to earlier, clearly states one of the problems of the twin 2-lane tunnels, as well as price, is that it's not 'future proof' because its locked in at 4 lanes and too expensive to change.

It also clearly ads that this new cheaper option IS future proof....

So, are they going to cut 6 lanes but only pave 4, or are they saying they can cut 4 now and cut 2 more later? And what about the bit under New North road and Avondale heights that IS a deep tunnel? Surely thats exactly as "future proof" as the old option?

    Something doesnt add up...

  • Speaker: Economics of the Waterview Tunnel,

By cut-n-covering nearly 2km of Gt North Rd, at least Oakley creek and reserve are saved.... at the expense of 2-3 years of traffic mayhem in not just that area but probably a far wider already gridlocked suburbia?

  • Hard News: That Buzzing Sound,

SH 20 presentation with maps and comparitive costings.

I note the cut-n-cover is being used in exact alignment with nearly 2km of existing Gt North Rd.

This avoids obliterating Oakly creek, and is probably a reasonable solution long term.... but it's going to be traffic mayhem for a few years while they do it.
