Yeah, Kyle, I get that aspect, but wasn't that what was done in the original trial?
He was tried, convicted and did some serious time all based on some seemingly rather shonky 'evidence'. (Not privy to the details of the 1st trial, but there was plenty of suspicion that DB was, at least partially, 'fitted up' to get the conviction. Which seems to happen a bit in high-profile cases in NZ - The Crewe Murders, the Sounds Murders...).

Interested in the (Freudian?) Bane/Bain thingy.

The whole case has become a bane to the police & judiciary. And I tend to agree with the whole public angst about how the police can never admit to having got it wrong the 1st time around. David Bain has served something like 13 years, had his conviction quashed(?) and now they are re-trying the case? What a collosal waste of time & money & our over-stretched courts.

What will be gained either way, regardless of the result of this trial? If it is just 'police prestige/pride' being maintained they need their heads examined.

  • Up Front: Boning Up,

    Jolisa,

I would suggest that the fashion swing from wide ties to narrow (and back) can be thought of as Rebellion within Conformity.

I have a mind & sense of humour that aspire to the giddy heights of the gutter.

I have to 'fess up to being a fan of Murray Mexted's commentary...he adds an element of surreality to what is generally Statement Of The Obvious and many comments that are just plain wrong.

His remark about "...I've been pumping Martin Leslie for quite a while now..." reduced me to helpless laughter at the time and he is quite happy to come out with the outlandish. Better him than one-time wicketkeeper Ian Smith. (Damned by faint praise?)

    Matt,

the club folded...I stopped my subscription to Harpers (I wasn't getting enough time to read the whole thing) and I switched jobs & don't get the train any more.

May have to re-visit the Harpers subscription as I have a bit more time to read these days.

I guess that golf is "sport for nerds". But bull-riding not so much.

But I play the former and love to watch the latter. Footie is just something in between those 2 extremes.

I tend to agree with your premise about how sports programming on tv is pitched at a demonimator lower than low. Even the jocks should be embarrassed.

The Cosy Club eh, Matt? I used to look out for other people on the train reading Harpers magazine but never saw a one. A lonely club, I was.

As a relatively new-Aucklander it seems to me that The Herald is actively campaigning for an end to print journalism. That rag is so not worth the price (any price - the adverts should ensure that it could be delivered free) that folks in the upper half of the North Is must be going online in droves for their news.

Have even knocked on the head my subscription to the Guardian Weekly as I found I was looking at stories I had already read online. It wasn't worth paying the price just for a new cryptic crossword each week. Close, thoughbut.

I will not lament the end of paper news.
