  • Hard News: Quantum Faster,

We have a wireless broadband system at home (currently at work) because of our semi-rural location. It is supplied by a company called GeoLink (probably www.geolink.co.nz). It is not totally reliable or particularly fast but beats the hell out of the old dial-up ihug service we had before.

I think it has elements of a relay-system involved so it can get a bit flaky but, as I say, it is am improvement on what we had before. And it is all we are likely to get for the foreseeable future.

It might be suitable for farmers, etc unless they want to watch/download movies, etc...

Article 1773992 of the Deep Space Concordat clearly states that " No Ferengi shall sit in judgement over alternate life-forms ..."

  • Hard News: Onwards and upwards,

Oh, and the "cheeky darkie" references remind me of something Tony Veitch said on-air about 1 of the Williams sisters grunting when playing tennis - it was something along the lines of "that's the way that apes communicate".

I was incensed at this but even more annoyed when absolutely nothing was said or done about it - as though these sort of remarks were acceptable in NZ. It somewhat tempered my 'sympathy' for him in his recent 'troubles'.

    Give a man a microphone...

  • Hard News: Onwards and upwards,

No, no, no, no, no. It is TV-One's Breakfast show - a shame-free zone for Paul Henry to pretend he is witty and likeable. Not a flagship station's news show at all.

I suspect a cunning plan to reduce the national level of obesity by making right-minded people puke up any breakfast they may have consumed as a result of being exposed to the toxic "wit" of the Recursive Douche-bag.

(Anyone might get the idea that I think he's an unpleasant little wanker...)

  • Hard News: Onwards and upwards,

If Danielle is referring to Paul Henry as teh recurrent douche, I'd just like to say, as a bit of a westie, that I am in full and complete agreement of her assessment.

And if you weren't referring to him as a douche-bag, Danielle, then I really think you should have.

I had no idea that he had been the beaten candidate when Georgina Beyer won her seat, but if I ever happen to meet said "gentleman" I look forward to really giving him some serious crapola about it.

That ruling about the Simpsons porn being classed as child pornography seems a bit wacky - or is it my sense of values that's out-of-kilter?

(I haven't seen it & have no wish to see it, but cartoon characters, ffs, = 'kiddie porn'...?)

  • Stories: Hotels,

Haven't really got stories of extremes in hotels, either good or bad. I've stayed in a number of very good, very expensive hotels (I have a wife that likes to be indulged and what's money any good for if you're not spending it making the one you love happy?).

On a recent trip around the South Island we stayed in an All Seasons in Ch'ch, on Papanui Rd, which was pretty scuzzy given the cost. It had a wash-sink & a fridge in the corridor between the lounge area & the bedroom - the fridge had a toe-biting door that got me twice before I got wise to it.
The Mercure in Dunedin was well-appointed but the room was small & my sweetheart didn't like the lack of air-con (alternative was to open the window onto Princes St, not conducive to a good night's sleep) or the lack of a wardrobe. I didn't mind so much. The food was good there, especially the breakfasts, and there is a young lady in the bar/dining area called Chloe who is a standout for service. (Not in a double-entendre way)
The hotel we stayed in Te Anau was rather soulless, but the counter was staffed by a little woman who had some sort of 'condition' that made me wonder about putting her in charge of reception, but she seemed to do an alright sort of job.
The hotel in Queenstown was very good, although again I can't remember its name (the Heritage maybe?) It had a central dining area & 3 blocks of accommodation. The food in the dining room was pricey but good. I honestly think I had the best meal of my life there.
The Punakaiki Resort was devoid of character and wasn't good value for the cost. The staff mostly didn't seem to give a damn and the standards in the restaurant left quite a bit to be desired - filthy wine glasses, spilt coffee, smears on the cutlery - that sort of thing.

The motels we stayed in varied dramatically from a down-market, "60's revisited" Kingswood Motel in Waimate (where the tea bags seemed to be originals from the 60's with no flavour at all) to an expensive but good-value Palms Motel in Nelson.

I did wonder about starting a website with personal experiences about the places we stayed, detailing good/bad service and value but work keeps getting in the way of that plan.

Got a lot of overseas hotels I could chunter on about, too...

  • OnPoint: Being a dick about Earth Hour,

Thanks for all the advice, Andrew.

Conscience pricked, I will adjust the 'inner Scotsman' and go & buy some CFLs to replace our non-dimmered standard incandescents. And see if I can get candle ones, too.

(I, for one, will be at a friend's place during earth hour so I best remember to tell the dogs not to turn the lights on while we are out.)

  • OnPoint: Being a dick about Earth Hour,

Can anyone explain this concept I read on the energywise website where they recommend exchanging a 100W incandescent with a 20W CFL?
Does this change in wattage give essentially the same lux? (And therefore are they claiming that for any given light-level the CFLs are 5 times as efficient?)

Do they make the CFLs in teh smaller size for those 'candle-stylee' bulbs that we have used in our low-profile sconces?
