  • Hard News: Just shoot me,

Wonderful presents mean rich parents, not good parents.

Not necessarily. Could just be thoughtful. One of my girls told me she remembered one of her best presents: a homemade pair of jungle print boxer shorts and a matching pair, with tail hole, for Bunky the monkey.

Correlation is all it is. What is true is that those users who go on to develop Schizophrenia tend to use most heavily, which is most likely an attempt at self medication.

I wasn't suggesting cause and effect. Only that he may be a heavy user because he's ill. It would be a sad thing if drug use and the attendant fuss led to lack of recognition of other health issues.

Jolisa, what you said, two sides of the story, prurient interest, witch hunts and so on.

This young man may have a mental illness, given the correlation between heavy cannabis use and the onset of symptoms of schizophrenia in vulnerable individuals. His distressing behaviour might contribute to it's lack of recognition as such.

But I think we all have an absolute right to privacy, if we so choose. And as parents we must use our best judgement. Would we write or speak in public the same way of spouses or best friends as we sometimes do of our children, or would it be seen as some sort of betrayal?

  • Up Front: The Holland Diaries, Pt 1,

Do's this mean that New Zealand psychologists are less cash remuneration driven than there Australian counterparts? or are there other efficiencies available.

Re psychologists in NZ. My daughter's doing her post graduate training in Victoria. She's funded as a 'local', same as if she was doing it here in NZ, i.e. mostly free. If she stays to work there she'll get paid more than here. So it seems we hire fewer of them, and pay them less.

  • Legal Beagle: Three strikes (w/ updates),

Habitual crims are relatively happy with three square meals a day cooked and paid for by someone else, TV 24/7 if they wish, gyms that as Simon Power said in the House that would cost a hefty annual fee out in the community, and being in a place where work is entirely voluntary.

But, from my admittedly limited experience, sometimes these guys' families miss them and they miss their families. It's not easy to maintain contact with children, parents, spouses when the 'rules' are scrupulously watched, families don't have access to a car, children have a stepdad who isn't interested. I see a ten year old kid struggle to write a letter to his Dad because he missed his monthly visit. There's a personal cost here, and no amount of TV and prison food will compensate for this. Recidivism/rehabilitation - we all need to think about this. Excuse me if I'm middle-class, I blame boarding school for my failings.

  • Up Front: The Missus,

I couldn't sleep last night and spent a few hours thinking of who did what, vis a vis 'job descriptions', and there were only a few I felt could be ascribed to only one person. IME anyway.
Wives - remember birthday cards/gifts/phone calls/visits, buy vacuum cleaner bags, and make Christmas cakes (if anyone does).
Mothers - have babies, breast feed, take children shoe shopping (aarggh!), and cover school books with Duraseal.
Husbands - choose the family car and most high end household technology, especially music systems.
Fathers - I couldn't think of anything they specifically did. Maybe the final say so on circumcision? (For boys I mean.)

And everyone should know how to cook.

  • Busytown: Flying visit,

Whitcoulls are selling a CD of the Wellington Int Ukulele Orch, if you can't get to a concert. It's a big hit in our car.

    Re Helen's leaving.
I don't think it's OTT either. If I lived in Wellington I'd have been there waving and crying too. Can't people say goodbye? All she did was walk down the steps and drive away.

  • Island Life: Let's be Frank,

but what is the Muffin Break chain? I've vaguely heard of them, but I'd assumed they were an overseas chain since I don't think I've ever seen one. Where are they?

Auckland, shopping malls, that sort of place.

You beat me to it, Simon - Bill and Ben seemed particularly popular in the City booths, in Grey Lynn and on Waiheke Island.

Back to the fascinating world of voting patterns... Did anyone else notice that New Plymouth was the only electorate where Bill and Ben got more votes than United Future? Go the old home town! Must be some jokers living there these days.
