but until I get an SLR, I think my photographic version of night time shall remain a bit shit and haphazard
lol Jackie. I can keep you good company.
Altho inspired by the tips and pics on here, I dusted off my dslr and captured a night portrait of the house, which turned out wonderful. Would post, but my front door feels insanely personal for some reason. Now have to venture into town or somewhere for some night light action.

This installation in Canberra came alive at night. Stabiliser: the glass window.
thanks for the breathing tips. Somewhere in the deep recesses I know that... I think I just push the boundaries of handheld because I am too lazy to haul my heavy manfrotto around. Or I'm getting shaky in my middle age.
I used a Tripod for this shot.
Yeah, let's give the unsung heroes their dues!

Fantastic shots, guys. What an awesome industrial strength park!
Long Gully Bridge, Northbridge, Sydney. One of the few times I've dragged the tripod out after dark.
Love Lilith's advice too.
And not breathing until the exposure is done. :-)
Hehe, I've tried that, I think I shake more when I am not breathing!

There are also pisswackers, supposedly the silent females that pee on you when you pick them up.
Thanks Joe, I'm so glad I joined this little community... stuff like this ain't in the handbook for Kiwis in Oz.

We get several million round this place in a good summer.
Your ears ring. The very land rings…Two years ago, we had what I dubbed 'the wall of sound' - it was so loud we all wore ear plugs outside but approaching the end of the driveway my collar bones would vibrate. Nature's drum and bass - some can produce close to 120 decibels.
Pretty little things though. This one my son is holding was thankfully silent.

Thanks Joe for your lovely and much happier stories of the frogmouths - you confirmed my feelings about the emotional lives of birds. Their booming is wonderful, I agree.
And Sofie, thank you. I'm loving wherever it is you live.
As for those spiders... are they wolf spiders? Beautiful but, no, not loveable. Not for me.
