It would've been quite a while before 1876 - like a couple of centuries - that one set of my ancestors sailed south in the "Desolator" and other craft, and began to take over the Canterbury Plains & peninsula
by battle, raiding, and intermarriage.
Waitaha & Kati Mamoe had sailed south quite a bit earlier than that.
Which is why 'First Four Ships' makes me giggle. Then sigh. -
Big O has had broadband via a fibre optic cable for 5+ years. There's less than 50 permanant residents, but it helps to have 4 businesses with international profiles. Especially if one is a Famous & Forthright Photographer who would not take No from Telecom...we'll loan Andris to your small dial-up rural community for a modest donation to the community association (offers of less than 6 figures plus the brillant man's keep - did I mention he is a gourmet? Has an extensive cellar? Is habituated to venison, 'bait, salmon, blue cod, crayfish etc.?- will be genially chuckled over-)

Point taken, robbery ( and I totally agree with those comments - all best n/n me

This has been a most fascinating thread but - despite occaisional quoting of my name & position - it ultimately has diddlysquat to do with me & my personal state/stance. Print copyright really is different from music (or visual) copyright.

Hilary, people laugh at manatees but I think they're sveltely beautiful: while there are adopt-a-manatee programmes, and good educational sites in the USA. almost nowhere else where manatees (& dugongs) are found isbothered in the least about their coming extinction (including Australia.)

As someone who is -by virtue of their very being-" not of a socially-sanctioned gender" I so understand the "transgressive behaviour" thang.
I'm an asexual: I am physiologically & obviously female, but I belong in neuter territory. I have many 'male' traits, and I learned, very early on, to disguise these - but I cant do it really successfully. Social apes that we are, a lot of people pick, very quickly, that I'm an outsider, not one of their kind (whether they're gay or bisexual or male or female.)
Which is why I find juvenile behaviour by creeps like Paul Henry personally offensive.

Thanks Stephen!
As a non-stats -able person, this was very helpful (& Hilary - loved the manatee bit!)

Sort of, Sacha - we grew up with a lot of militaria stuff, including the behaviours and the ethos, all around(I was born in 1947)but most of family service people had been demobbed by the time I came to be alive. By the time my youngest sibs (I'm oldest of 8 born, 5 living) arrived. all that stuff had pretty well gone.
I've just sent that sketch on to one of my cousins, who was Navy (and was on the deck of the "Black Prince" when she was stood by for one of the atomic bomb tests) - he literally lives for this kind of stuff! Loves it!
Teh Intertubes help!

Sacha- heh!
(I had an RAF greatuncle, and my father was a RNZAF supply sergeant.) -
While some distraught grandson rushes up "That's my RAF grand-dad you fuckwit!"
