Storr? Sure!
If you look at some of the Gaelyn Gordon works, there's that same dichotomy - O! This is so cute - arrrgh! No, it's not!
I dont have literary gods, but Pratchett is someone I truly esteem. While I agree with you Kracklite, apropos the age of the protagonists determinng supposed age-reader stream (that'd apply to the Tiffany Aching books), where do we place "The Amazing Maurice And His Educated Rodents" (which is one of my favourites)?Just incidentslly, reader kids in my family who love Pratchett have come to him via the 'adult' novels - and then gone on to devour the kidult titles-

Kracklite - Atwood "campaigning for a Booker"?
Doesnt happen.
Your publisher/s/critics do - but an author *cant.* And if it tries (I am assured)it is immediately discountenanced. Are the former Booker-McConnell awards political? O yes indeedy - but not necessarily in an obvious way: for a long time, it was - UK book wins this year, Commonwealth book next year.
Aldiss's comments are bang on the money.
For myself, I find some of the best writing & storytelling - bar none -in the scific/spec-fic/fantasy genres. It's interesting to note that within ANZ kids'/YA fiction* -going by sales figures - Teh Yoof think so too.
*I know publishers like these terms, but: I have a considerable collection of kK/YA fiction, and it is -Just Good Fiction! Think Gordon. Think Mahy. Think Lasenby. Think several others-

I relish whisky (and the occaisional dram of Irish whiskey aint too bad either.) While I'm a serious Islay single malt fan, I'm not an age-worshipper (I've found some excellent drops in Michael's lesser-known deliciousnesses) and I'm not a whisky snob: I keep a couple of good Islay malts for those I know appreciate them; an NZ label (tends to be Milton, but some of the stuff sitting in Oamaru is exciting - I'll just have to win Lotto!) and a Jamieson's or Tullamore Dew or Blackbush
for the whiskey fans. Lastly, not least a cheap good blended Scotch ("Famous Grouse" or equivalent) for those that like sparkling sweet stuff* and/or ice with their dram. The idea is that fellow-drinkers gain pleasure from their drams, whatever the dram maybe...I hope to make a future Dramfest (a couple of unexpected events intervened this time) so, many thanks Matthew for this report! Slainthe!
*The number of Edinburghers & Glaswegians & Paisley & Aberdeen folk I saw sloshing gingere ale or lemonade into their glass was - an eye-opener!

Thanks Lucy!I'll go investigate the halogens-

Lucy Stewart. as a very longtime devotee of science-fiction, speculative fiction, and gloriously outright fantasy
"whenever a spec-fic work is acknowledged as a work of literature, it undergoes a mysterious transformation into "normal literature" "
has been one of my gripes for ages. Margaret Atwood said "The Handmaid's Tale" wasnt spec-fic. She said "Oryx and Crake" wasnt sci-fic. Cormac McConnor said "The Road" was "serious literature."
Cheezus! Why do some writers think there is something *wrong* with their works being included in 'genre' categories?
O, wait a mo'-

BenWilson, good to see you can admit to being wrong! I have respect for anyone who can do that.
Meds, paticularly for mental illnesses, are very much implicated in weight gain (and, ironically, some appetite suppressants can contribute to mental illness...)

I have CFL bulbs throughout the house (7), except for a stickon LED in my bedroom, and a halogen desklight (I need really bright focusable life for work.) I find the DFLs last longer that the incandesants, but not as long as claimed life...which isnt a wonder: we have frequent brownouts & powercuts. so I am pathetically grateful when something lasts as long as a year.
As a kind of OT query - anybody have any experience with anti SAD lights? 3 of us i te whanau are prone to this disorder.

"And every person who's ever lost weight will tell me I'm right- that they did it THEMSELVES."
O no they wont!
I have a (cousin circle) family member who was morbidly obese. She was also clinically depressed, and some of her meds added to the weight problem. Over a period of *7 years* - with much help from a pyschiatrist, her GP (finding other antidepressives), all her whanau, and a nutritionist, her weight is now within healthy parameters for her age, ancestry, and limited ability to exercise. She is the first to say, loudly, in hui settings, "I didnt do this by myself. I couldnt've done this
by myself. I needed -and got - a lot of help."BenWilson, I think you have a very interesting problem with accepting you can be wrong. It's fairly boring actually-

"paid to get long-winded"
O, so, so much do I!
But let's have a wee look at things: Paul Litterick is a couth & literate commentator (and I enjoy his blog.)
Some of us have obsessive qualities (dont get me started on food! Or insects/arachnids! Or fishing! Or- nah, just dont-)
I contribute to PAS because sometimes I think I have something to offer. I read every other contributor's posts. in threads I'm interested in, in the same way. I've never contributed to a sports thread - because sports (of any kind) dont interest me.
And so, Paul?

The words not only 'shape/'react''/make context'/'couch'-
they *are* all these things...our tongues are so imperfect: written down, they are lost ten times over-
