  • Up Front: Making a List, Not Bothering…,

I know there are studies that show that individuals who view large amounts of porn (ie more than six hours a week, which is about four movies) are more likely to have raped and to have poor attitudes to women, but they're not showing a causal link, just a correlative one.

Aren't there also studies that find rape is not motivated by sex, but by violence?

  • Hard News: TiVo and some tunes,

I have finally got Freeview working nicely with VLC on Linux with a cheap little USB stick.

Is it made by Hauppauge or AverMedia?

  • Hard News: TiVo and some tunes,

Good to see TVNZ & Sky starting to throw down their weapons.

AverMedia do some decent internal desktop tuners, although they have a few hoops to jump thru when used in Linux or MythTV etc:

    AverMedia Satellite PCI
    AverMedia Terrestrial HD PCI
    AverMedia DVB-S/DVB-T HD\Analogue PCI-E

And regarding the Virender Singh case, we know what can happen when shopkeepers who kill in "self-defence" are let off the hook.

  • Hard News: Onwards and upwards,

BTW - Andrew Little for Mt. Albert anyone? Just saying.

Actually, he's Welly-based, so more likely Rongotai if Annette King retires.

But I felt Alison Mau handled it well; her revulsion was pretty clear. Pippa Wetzel probably wouldn't have said a word.

Kay Gregory had the right idea when she split with Mr Henry.

  • Hard News: Onwards and upwards,

The prick is all class, it is a little window into the women hating culture of small minded right wing misogynists like of Paul Henry, and says a lot about why that other powerful woman, Helen Clark, was so loathed by dickheads who also find this sort of thing hilariously funny.

And there was no such vitriol when Jim Bolger & Don McKinnon were posted to Washington and London respectively.

  • Hard News: Onwards and upwards,

All speed for the UN appointment.

One thing to look at is the battle for the Mt Albert candidacy. Does Phil Twyford (who has been more or less annointed by Clark in the past) go there, or continue to build a profile in Auckland Central, where he's already the buddy MP?

Either or. For the other seat that Mr Twyford doesn't fill, maybe someone like Chris Yoo (#53 on the 2008 list) would be ideal, he could reach to ethnic swing voters and make a nice counterbalance to Melissa Lee on the other side of the chamber.

  • OnPoint: Being a dick about Earth Hour,

I just don’t get all this hostility toward the Nanny State. I’ve watched several variations of the always-popular Nanny programmes on TV. In each case, the sensible nanny rocks up to a house with a couple of delinquent, out-of-control brats and gets them to sort their shit out so they can bring their children up properly. End result is a house full of model citizens. What's not to like?

All this hate for Nannies and love for Boot Camps suggests to me some kind of fetish…

When people whinge about the 'nanny state', just point out to them Lee Kuan Yew's favourite quote, "If Singapore is a nanny state, then I am proud to have fostered one."

Other than that, there's a noticeable liberal-conservative divide between 'boot campers' and 'nanny statists'. I'd say it's a conflict between reality-based and faith-based ideologies, part of a battlefront in a wider Kulturkampf.

  • OnPoint: Being a dick about Earth Hour,

While I'm being a dick about this, I should also address the people who are opposing Earth Hour by joining "Edison Hour", which encourages participants to "use as much power and energy as possible in order to celebrate the advancement of mankind."

    Please, learn some fucking science.

    How about "Enron Hour"?

  • OnPoint: Being a dick about Earth Hour,

Keith's post has made me angry all over again about National's axis-of-stupidity attack on rational energy efficiency initiatives. One might hope that having won the election with the "OMG! the commie lightbulbs are coming!" message they'd settle down and do something more intelligent.

It sounds increasingly like the sort of stuff President Obama launched an intellectual nuke at, but with light bulbs instead of tyre pressures.

Again, what if Obama, Gordon Brown et al were to make energy efficiency and carbon reduction conditions of a free trade agreement? Would it be the lobbyists who pushed for an FTA under Dubya who'd now be whingeing about Yankee paternalism?

And what if a tourist does a Nicky Hager and writes an eco-exposé on NZ, regardless of the truth or not?

    Damian, I believe you're being called a friend o the tories (comment#1).

Surely the commenter isn't referring to Julie Christie of Touchdown TV?
