  • Hard News: Vision and dumbassery,

Mr Cunliffe has chosen to run a positive campaign, prior to all of the dirty politics revelations, it would seem that he has avoided all the trouble Key and his followers have got themselves into by their bad behaviour.

At this point given Mr Key's past dealings with that vile Slater person and his complete inability to tell a story that doesn't change every day I don't see there's any way he could make a credible PM candidate.

Did you see what I just did? I just proved Cunliffe was the only viable candidate, and I didn't actually need to discuss Cunliffe's party or its policies, Key's many character flaws, combined with the make up of the various parties in the NZ MMP landscape make Cunnliffe the only viable PM - I'm not going to vote for his party because all I have to do is make sure he can form a coalition

Key convinced me last week that likely the best thing I can do for my country on Sat is vote for for IM, and I'll likely vote for them or the Greens, either way that's a vote against John and his continual eroding of my personal privacy

  • Hard News: Vision and dumbassery,

Yeah, I worked for startups in Silicon Valley for 20 years, when I see Key, the way he talks and his body language, I see every marketing guy I ever worked with - their job is not to tell the truth it's to sell stuff. It's worse than that, on the GCSB thing I see that marketing guy who doesn't know his product, who keeps throwing out pitches to see if they'll stick

The way you can tell if these guys are lying is easy, you check to see if their lips are moving, it's their job

I was thinking about this while "great big Norton Anti-Virus" thing Key was going on about and how this was his justification for the Speargun tap - his claim that this was not mass surveillance it was to protect us against.

Problem is that if you want an "anti-virus" or other active security you need to be able to change, kill and inject packets in real time, that's not what a cable tap does, it just copies bits without changing them - you just don't build and deploy a cable tap to do cyber protection you build it to quietly copy everything that goes by without changing, you build it for mass surveillance, nothing else

you should really google "Jake Starrow" (with the quotes), apart from your postings here all one gets is the defunct facebook page of some 13yr old english kid trying to look all gangster. It's as if you came into being out of the etherwhen you started posting here

An then years later it turned out that LBJ had secretly threatened to cut off all our trade ties if we didn’t go and our (National) government acceded without a peep

This is really interesting: can you provide a reference?

Oh that's weird I can't (at least not with a quick and dirty search) I do however remember the big fuss the reveal caused in the early 80s, it seems almost as if there was no internet back then or something

Remember when most of the country ( and Helen Clark ) did not want NZ troops in any capacity in Afghanistan. They went anyway.

Remember when most of the country did not want NZ troops in Vietnam. They went anyway

An then years later it turned out that LBJ had secretly threatened to cut off all our trade ties if we didn’t go and our (National) government acceded without a peep

I spent most of my teenage years in NZ scared of the draft, the ballot stopped less than 6 months before my 18th birthday

There’s history here, the sort you are supposed to learn so that you don’t repeat it, I don’t want another generation of kiwi kids to live under that cloud ever

Jake - PA is an environment where we're all fairly familiar with each other, we've argued just about everything to death for more than a decade - as such we're pretty familiar with people coming in and astro-turfing, we've seen it over and over again, it got tiresome long ago.

Have a look at your latest post it says "Since Sep 2014 • 47 posts" (all in the past week), and look at Danielle's it says "Since Nov 2006 • 3646 posts " she's likely been posting even longer because we only started counting in Nov 2006.

So as an obvious newbie here you do have a higher bar to jump if you want to be credible - you start again with your real name, you could go out of your way to be polite, you could listen to others for a while without telling them - I'm sure you get the idea ... did I mention the being polite bit, the listening to others bit .... they're an important part of why this place is a fun and interesting place to be .... what it isn't is whailoil or kiwblog

I thought that the 5-eyes had agreements that they would not spy on each other (or does "each other" only mean governments and not their citizens)
