I will was just thinking, this piece of equipment Key says they test fitted "like a muffler" where is it now? Still at the bottom of the a sea? In the GCSB basement in Wellington? I can't imagine there's much of a market for "only got wet once" cable taps

Well there was a Q/A time for the press at the end - that would have been a great question to ask.
Snowden had previously released a whole bunch of documents about xkeyscore and how it worked and what its capabilities were, he had already explained that in order to meet various legal strictures there were filters in place that allowed various intelligence agencies to operate under their local laws .... I don't think it's inconsistent with what he's previously said that there's a NZ check box up there with the US, UK, Aussie and Canadian ones - it's not like he's suddenly said this is a thing

'adam' we know NZ is hooked into the system because it's part of 5-eyes - Snowdon is a 1st person witness of what the system does, there are no other such witnesses who have come forward to say otherwise. So far we think we can trust him because everything else he has released has turned out to be true.
Key on the other hand has changed his story 2-3 times a day for the past week and at this point seems to be spinning so fast he may actually take off under his own momentum

If you're tapping a cable in real time and saving all the data in a central store you have a little problem - you need to install more cables to get the data there - theoretically as cables fill up you need as many clandestine cables as you have real ones .... not something you can really hide (or afford).
Instead it makes more sense to but your data repositories as close to the tap points as possible, in our case it would likely be Auckland or Hawaii.
Remember how a Google search works - each search hits hundreds of Google servers to return you your results, I expect that XKEYSCORE works the same way

yes the basic assumption here is that they can hack any router (including your home DSL/fibre gateway and your phone company's cell tower) to see the devices located behind it

Ian: each bit consists of many billions of photons taking half doesn't remove the information carried by the rest.
To be fair the only well know example of how this was done was the prism (probably many prisms) that was installed in the AT&T switch room in San Francisco - it probably did disrupt service when it was done but essentially copies all the information passing through it to a secondary fibre

Craig: I think it was a red herring last night, but as an issue it probably needs to be taken in the context of the entire rest of the dotcom case, trying to explain it on 15sec sound bites on TV during an election is not the way to address it. It's hard enough to do the GCSB thing 1 week out from the election (personally I'd have started it a week earlier) - because this election is about John Key and his veracity, not Dotcom's (he's not even running for office)

Frankly I think the Hollywood thing is a red herring, John Key's lies about mass surveillance are the important issue here
