  • Hard News: Because that's how I roll,

I've given up on file sharing, since they seem to detect it and throttle it

There's work going on to avoid that through encrypted torrents. Personally I can't be bothered with file sharing either, mostly because I'm not a big watcher of videos.

  • Hard News: Because that's how I roll,

hang up, fill in a change of address card, and send it to them

    That'd be about right.

Personally, I'm prepared to pay $10 more a month for Telecom/Xtra to have a single point of blame - if the service doesn't work then it's them or the modem, and I have two modems to try.

I realise a lot of people are on some sort of crusade against monopoly suppliers and will tolerate a degree of crap to pursue this, but for me, life's too short.

  • Speaker: Legislating in the Twilight Zone,

Get Up Australia is a left wing on-line political community opposed to the Howard government, they have 220,000 members.
    ...
A similar NZ community would effectively be made illegal under this bill

No, they would just be limited to spending $120k in election year. That buys an awful lot of web hosting.

    From: Faux-Vives, Geneva

Tse-Ming, is there really a suburb of that name? I think it roughly translates to "Vivid Fakes". Or do you mean Eaux-Vives?

Oh and on that subject, why does the Air NZ expresso stand (morning rush-hour only) do cappucinos and hot chocolate, but no mochas?

I would get one from Fuel, but something about me just can't spend money when the KC is free.

Nobody says hi to anyone in the Koru club, whatever you wear.

It's a little hub of English railway etiquette.

What do you really learn from sitting through a speaker rabbitting on for an hour that you can't get in 5 minutes by reading the same information?

I know the real purpose of these events is to network and make contacts, but I just have this massive aversion to standing around with a glass of wine and a plate of snacks (sorry, canapes) in a room full of people I don't know (and in many cases, don't really want to know).

I guess I don't have the required social skills - not least, the ability to hold a glass of wine and a plate whilst imbibing from either - how do you do that elegantly? Is it taught at Business School?

  • Hard News: Looking for Monsters,

It would be reasonable to amend the bill so that anyone spending less than $1,000 didn't have to declare their identity?

This of course wouldn't in any way satisfy the Nats and their cheerleaders, but would stop them going on about sermons and megaphones.

(If a church, like Destiny, are actively campaigning at the pulpit then they bloody should be spending capped. Why should political opinion under the guise of religion get special treatment?)

  • Cracker: Mo' Wellington,

Although does anyone else find the whole Movember thing is actually getting a bit too ubiquitous?

    Yes. Me.

It's a real mainstream thing as well. None of my social circle has grown any lip fluff. Everyone at work apart from me and the two token women has, however.

And it looks crap. I'm almost about to get a green mohawk and donate some money to leftist campaigning causes, but I have this unfortunate need to earn money.

  • Hard News: Meet the New Bob,

Ha ha ha! I used to work for a company who had the Employment Court rule that bad-arse swearing was acceptable in that workplace and so employees couldn't be disciplined for it.

Is there a list of such workplaces and do they have a certificate you can hang on the wall? <i>"This is a blunt-language friendly workforce and if you don't like it, fuck off!"</i>
