  • Hard News: Citizens,

Matt Robson had it about right when he spoke of the "terrible few" and the "sad "many". And before anyone says he's out of touch, his sister was killed by a drunk driver some years back.

Where would the Garth McVicars and Peter Lows of this world draw the line on vigilantism, if any at all? I'd be interested to see their reactions, for instance, if someone truly crossed the line and started solving the gangs issue with a good supply of C4, a remote control kit, some automotive know-how, and a leaf out of the Stern Gang's book.

  • Hard News: The Debate and Onwards,

The only thing Reagan had going on was a very public face, a career of public performance and (sad to say) Alzheimer's.

Maybe the Alzheimer's partly explains how he managed to single-handedly treble the US national debt.

  • Hard News: The joke that went too far,

    Rich:

Entrapment of dodgy commentators in this way is just the same thing as the liquor licensing people do when they tart up 17-year olds and send them into bottle shops, isn't it? Or the BBC did when they infiltrated a police college in England and taped the trainees racist outbursts.

I'd say the examples given above are more like sting operations or exposés than entrapment.

  • Hard News: The Policeman at the Dinner Table,

If people succumb to the temptation to enact Dirty Harry or Death Wish, chances are they won't count on the potentially deadly reprisals. I'm probably not the only one to suspect there would be major civil meltdown just waiting to happen, if the string-em-up brigade/penal-industrial complex have their way.

On a side note regarding the Libz, Bioshock is set in an Ayn Randian utopia gone haywire.

  • Southerly: Life at Paremoremo Boys' High,

The teachers and masters at a very prestigious high school in ChCh I attended (between 1994-96) weren't too bad. Pity the same couldn't be said for many of my fellow students.

My year group guide once told me, "You'll recognise who the boarders are, because they won't particularly like you." I later came to realise that many of them hailed from rural areas, particularly from the Mainland. The nice boarders were nice, the nasty ones were pretty backward and bigoted.

A lot of the day students weren't much better, especially the 'cashed-up-bogan' types. During 7th Form, about a dozen of these cashed-up-bogans - and I still know the names of some of them - were later busted for drug abuse at an out-of-school party.

  • Hard News: "Rubbish" is putting it politely,

Minor gripe...I know what you mean but Christian and/or family values does not equal homophobic alarmist bigotry. It can and often does I'll grant, but there are people who are christian and also don't have a problem with people being gay.

Otherwise known as the "Hate is not a family value" movement.

I've never liked loaded questions, but here's one I'd like to ask the Listener:

How big is the shark you've just leaped over?
