  • Hard News: Poll Crunch,

No one sledged better than Merv Hughes:

Hughes to Robin Smith: "So, does your husband play cricket too?"
    ...

    Hughes: "You can't f---ing bat!"
Smith: "Merv, we make a fine pair. I can't f---ing bat and you can't f---ing bowl."

  • Hard News: Poll Crunch,

Well, Ben, perhaps Hagel thought (and perhaps still) thinks the GOP can be a principled conservative party that deserves to run anything more complicated than a cake stall. And it's a bloody shame someone like Hagel isn't going to be around to start the fight to take back the GOP.

The status quo will probably remain in place until America adopts a genuinely multi-party system. And that's likely a long way off.

  • Hard News: Poll Crunch,

I advocate water pistols. Or maybe just pistols.

Better still, threaten to push the play button on this:

  • Hard News: Don't bother voting,

The fake Labour billboard that takes up half the front page of today's feature section is very weird too. You really have to look for the tiny line of text that says it's a "digitally altered image", and I suspect most people won't do that.

    Was it this one?

Personally, I think they're really pushing the line, and not in a good way.

Recapping a previous post by Rich of Obz, I'd be interested to find out how far such a line can be pushed, before they find themselves at the wrong end of a Weapon of Mass Trustbusting?

Do you think we can get the deposit back on the halls? The Herald's editorial this morning says that failng "some cataclysmic occurrence, an event resounding enough to shatter the current template", the 2008 general election is over and National has won.

  • Hard News: Life Goes On,

Why is it that when our businesses reach a certain size they get sold off? What's holding us back? Often the answer is that our businesses are undercapitalised, that our infrastructure is under capitalised. Well, we've got a few lean years ahead of us then if we're waiting for the international markets to come knocking.

Joe & Jane Kiwi still haven't forgotten Black Monday, although that partly relates to inexperience and naivety on their part. The bankruptcy of DFC was another major factor. And Fay Richwhite's Gekkoism with the likes of TranzRail & Telecom certainly didn't help much either.

I believe KiwiSaver, rather than the Cullen Fund, will be the eventual ice breaker for the NZX - think of it as sharemarket investment for the non-investor, maybe even the anti-investor as well. That is, if the Dancing Cossacks don't sack and plunder it.

  • Hard News: Life Goes On,

Why do US newspapers come out and endorse candidates and ours do not?
    Well, not explicitly.

Because ours are worried that if they explicitly declared themselves to be National party pamphlets, a non-National government might notice that they are an unregulated and abusive monopoly?

I believe it's called Mutually Assured Unbundling.

  • Hard News: Through the Looking Glass,

Many years ago, the Development Finance Corporation was NZ's main startup financier. Its basic model was sound, but later went down with Black Monday after drinking too much Muller Thurgau and straying outside of its core competency, by speculating on 'glamour' companies such as the ill-fated Chase Corp and Equiticorp. DFC's demise left a major vacuum for local investment and increased NZ's vulnerability to 'branch office' economics.

In a similar vein, South Australia became the poor cousin of the Aussie states after its State Bank went under.

  • Speaker: Objects to Remember With,

And I thought to myself: what a frikken waste of prime real estate. What an indictment on our council that they allowed these cheap-arse crapholes to be built. Nevermind the financial crisis, these were our canaries in the mine. We should have realised back then that a 'free unregulated market' will not produce the best products for consumers. They will be produce whatever will produce the best (ie quickest) profit.

I have confidence they'll be meeting the wrecking ball before long. Wellington has its architectural abominations too, but it seems to have learned from the Auckland shoebox experience somewhat.

  • Hard News: Inimical to the public good,

're fucked, as a country, by the Southern Cross monopoly on international transit. Capacity on that pipe has multiplied several times over in recent years, but we're still charged as though it's a scarce resource. Anything that has to come from offshore is chewing up ISP margins something awful. That's why services like Akamai are so popular with ISPs here.

Roll on the Kordia-PipeNet cable! And from Kapiti if possible.
