  • Public Address Word of the Year 2009,

I'd like the phrase it's knowledge, bro to receive some consideration from the judges.

Happily seconded. Here's the exact origin in case anyone forgot.

  • Public Address Word of the Year 2009,

I think every time I hear the word 'stakeholders', it takes a week off my life.

Yup, it's shallow and evasive and hence so very 2009.

Ooh - as just brought back into my mind by the estimable Danielle, can we add Death Panels to the list?

  • Public Address Word of the Year 2009,

My nominations so far are going to Icetralia, Teabagging, Glibertarian and the splendidly sneeze-like Ishoozaround.

I've also noticed lately the increased presence of the word stakeholders. Once upon a time you might have heard that someone was consulting parties affected or parties concerned - now they only consult people who have some kind of metaphorical shareholding in an issue. Presumably the concerned but not sufficiently 'stakeholding' (according to some definition) can shove off.

So stakeholders get listened to, but the rest of us get something else, which brings me to my own coinage of insultation - the political process of seeking a wide range of views concerning an already decided future course of action.

Can I throw in a late vote for Prominent Entertainer?

Have to give credit for a sense of humour though.

Oh wow, agreed. For some reason I didn't spot that as Andrew's contribution - thought it was a smart little dig by someone else...

Scott beat me to it more or less, but here's part of the relevant section from the actual NZTE report:

Satisficing is the technical term for what we often refer to as the bach, boat and BMW phenomena. It is probable that satisficing, that can be described as the struggle between applying effort to creating more wealth and spending time and effort in leisure pursuits, occurs in all cultures. However it appears that in New Zealand leisure wins out at a lower threshold of wealth accumulation than in most other cultures.

While this is an important issue, and the national cultural origins are supported by our research, satisficing cannot readily be altered by changing management practices so the aim embodied in this report is to create additional wealth without compromising our lifestyle ambitions, thus negating any adverse impacts of the habit and allowing us to make the most of the Kiwi lifestyle. That is, to create additional wealth from the same amount of effort.

  • Hard News: The March for Democracy,

For the meantime, all the best to all of you.

This sounds rather too much like a 'signing off' comment to me - say it ain't so, or at very least not permanently. I enjoy your comments along with those of Gio and Ian and... well, because there are too many to list I'll say that hardly ever have I regretted reading anyone's posts on this site, with the exception of the few easily identifiable professional squabblers/trolls.

For the record I don't think Gio's comment was particularly rude, and Ian seemed uncomfortable with the attitudes being expressed (regarding the 9/11 demolition argument) a fair bit earlier on than that anyway. Perhaps he would have taken a spell regardless. I hope in time he returns.

If that's an indication of your attention to detail and reality, avoid wiring.

Andrew Clive: against the darker side of my nature, I have to endorse Tim Hannah's safety advisory quoted above.

lets divide the country up and have a communist block, probably the south island, because the cars wont rust out like they do in the north. And the south would make a better back drop for producing bleak, low budget film dramas.

    Tear down this... strait?

Ah. I'm not sure what you're getting at but I'll defer to your judgment - and please accept my apologies for lack of funny...
