"Let the abos go loose, Bruce...they're of no further use..."

Wow. I'd never heard that song all the way through (my grandad had a record but it was badly scratched) - amazing what you find lurking in ancient pop culture.

To which I can only respond with the classic kiwi breaker of awkward silences and changer of subjects: how about those All Blacks, eh?

Well, I could give up and stop feeding the troll, but I think it's important to have it on the record that that sort of thing is Not OK round here. If only to reassure other female posters/lurkers that this isn't yet another internet boys club where the dumbass sexists are allowed to drown out the reasoned debate.

Plenty of people call the media on carrying out this kind of vile shit, Robbie. Because of people justly critiquing that panty-sniffing approach to victims of sexual assault, the media don't do it as much these days, and stick to reporting it when defence lawyers do. Even defence lawyers have to draw the line somewhere, or they lose the sympathy of the jury.

My point is this - if vile shit goes unchallenged, it continues. I wouldn't stand by and let a friend do the whole "she asked for it" routine, and I wouldn't continue to participate in a forum where that kind of nonsense is welcome. Take your offensive misogyny to somewhere where it's acceptable - it's not here.

The second hand/op shop thing depends on there being a stratum of society that can afford to get rid of their good quality stuff without much recompense. The Queenstown op shop is the most striking example of this; I reckon you'd be able to pick up a lot more nice stuff from op shops in high income suburbs than in low income suburbs, where people buy cheap to begin with, use things until they fall apart, hand them down to friends and relatives or sell them for as much as they can on trademe.

these victims were sent to get a story knowing he was damaged goods

So, once someone's committed a crime and become "damaged goods", anyone who's subsequently been assaulted by them should have known better and therefore has no legal right of redress? Seriously, there are enough catch-22s for women wanting to avoid sexual assault without you inventing new ones.

Robbie, that's no different from saying she was asking for it by going back to his place/not fighting hard enough/not expecting a guy to be an animal/wearing a skirt/drinking too much etc etc. It's a crappy justification for sexual assault in general, and no better as applied to this particular situation.

...it'll all come out in the wash, but these two gutless "victims" deserve to be publically raked across the coals IMO.
... of course they wouldn't lie to sex up a story, especially if their jobs are on the line should it be found they misled the public.

And you know this how? Were you there? It bothers me how often in the absence of any evidence one way or another, some people are determined to assume that in any accusation of sexual assault "she was lying" is the most likely scenario. Perhaps the journalists had a motive to lie, although lying to make a story more interesting is drawing a long bow, and one of those things that tends to put journalists' jobs on the line. But surely so does the accused. It's one thing to take a newspaper to task for creating its own stories, it's a whole other thing to heap all the blame for the entire incident on the women involved. The latter looks more like something from the misogynist and sexual assault apologists' playbook than any reasonable response.

  • Hard News: Ready for the Big One?,

Palmy's a flood plain - it's right on the Manawatu River. What about Masterton? :-)

We have some intermittently filled water containers and a 10kg sack of rice for the Big One/pandemic/can't be arsed shopping this week. And multiple jars of chutney in the fridge that various people have given us. I reckon you could keep going for a while on chutney.

Desserts definitely have half-lives - nobody wants to have the last bit, so it gets cut into smaller and smaller pieces but never quite disappears.
