Is it just me, or does this guy look eerily like Muldoon at times? Warning: do not click if you intend to get any more work done today.
What's more he's actively malevolent like Muldoon. e.g., just when I thought I had the little b*stard beat, he pulled out a massive iron bar and hit 'me' over the head.

Bart asked:
What percentage of the USA's GDP does porn make up?
Is porn bigger than corn? Is it bigger than Hollywood? Or bigger than big oil?
Good questions. There is a parallel with the contribution illicit drugs (marijuana in particular) can make to local economies. e.g., Is marijuana worth more to Northland than dairying? Is marijuana worth more to British Columbia than forestry?
My hunch would be it's bigger than corn but smaller than big oil in the US. Unfortunately, perhaps, the corn lobby seems more influential in Congress etc. than the porn lobby.

Back in Bennelong, here's a detailed breakdown of the votes.
With 79% counted (about 77,000 votes) Howard is trailing by about 340 votes. It appears the Green vote collapsed and fell in behind the Labor candidate.
Although quite how that works in terms of Preferential Voting I'm not too sure.
Interestingly there were over 3000 "informal" votes - I assume this means spoiled or blank. The flip side of compulsory voting perhaps?
Anyway, for what's it's worth ... ABC Predicted Final Result: ALP GAIN: 5.8% swing to ALP

Charles - thanks for the update on Bennelong.
Craig - yeah, the stick was definitely humorous/demeaning rather than hard-hitting/journalistic. But then Rove is comedy/entertainment. I haven't detected any pretensions to serious current affairs.
Come to think of it, the script for the whole episode was significantly above the usual offering from Rove and the crew (which often elicits a "meh" in our household). Perhaps they wanted to end their season with a bang. If so, mission accomplished.

I watched Rudd on Rove on Friday night in anticipation of the election. I thought his calmness and composure was perfect for the occasion, and Rove gave him a fair amount of stick. He remained thoughtful and on-message and at times was vaguely funny which is about the best that could be hoped for on the night.
Does anyone know whether Howard has officially lost his seat or not?

This is assuming conservatives can tear themselves away from their gin and tonics (if rich), sherries (if old), or rheinecks (if poor).

Strange map (although heartening in light of a forthcoming trip to Queensland).
I don't understand why Ontario is given a different categorization from the rest of Canada. While enforcement is, ahem, patchy across Canada, I'm not aware of any such difference between Ontario and the other Provinces. If anything it is BC that has the reputation for the most lenient enforcement.
Criminal law itself is a federal responsibility and can't be altered by the Provinces.
Also, I thought it was decriminalized in the UK?
There are also some places (e.g. Mexico) where enforcement against tourists is a lucrative business.

If the THC content in weed had increased 10 or 20 fold (and clearly the 'educators' are just plucking the number off the shelf in their asses for the occasion) wouldn't that be a good thing from the perspective of harm reduction?
You'd only have to smoke (or otherwise consume) a 10th, or a 20th, as much weed to get baked as was once the case.
And as a general rule I imagine the less smoke you draw into your lungs, the better?

That story's quite weird. It's hard to tell but there's no reference to them having had any pot bar the six little seedlings they got caught with. In which case, they were hardly in a position to supply themselves, let alone their schoolmates.
Still, let's not let that stop the grown-ups having a full-blown fit over it ...
Ahh, but a full-blown fit is what we do best! But yeah, the story makes no reference whatsoever to the number or state of preparedness of the "plants". Presumably if the kids had a source for seeds, they had a potential source for "leaves" as well. But it's still a leap.
Anyway, like the billboard says in Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas, "Don't gamble with marijuana! In Nevada: Possession - 20 years. Sale - life!"
Life imprisonment (and not just in a boarding school) would teach the little blighters. I will email Mssrs Peters, Dunne and Anderton with this suggestion forthwith.

Nelson College has zero tolerance for this kind of carry on.
Mr O'Shea said the group had been "tight" and he was satisfied that the drugs had not been distributed widely through the school community.
However, other students had been exposed to the drug by knowing it was being grown and smoked by the group, he said.
Oh the humanity! Imagine knowing that some kids at your school had grown and smoked "the leaf".
Next thing you know high school kids will be experimenting with drinking alcohol when the teachers aren't looking, or smoking cigarettes on the tennis courts.
