  • Hard News: So far from trivial,

which condones/encourages physical aggression in men.

If you are referring to sport (where it is legal to be aggressive but with relatively clearly defined boundaries) then you are correct but on the otherhand I can't think of a sport that women don't also compete in Anita.

You name it, rugby, league, boxing, ... ... ... all have female competitors as well.

  • Hard News: User-generated Speechification,

In ten years on the internet I don't think I've paid to read a single thing (outside of monthly line charges).

I get a sense you might first need more background understanding about how people, cultures and behaviours relate.

Don't worry about me. I know how the bigger picture stuff works. But having first hand experience of
    a) rugby and league clubs over many years
    and
    b) the behaviour of many males who have never set foot near one

I still think it often gets a lot overblown.

For many thousands of young people sports clubs (particularly rugby in this country) have helped sort them out not ruined them and it's unhelpful to throw the blame on specific parts of society and yet not accept Veitch's own personal excuses to do with work, stress, exhaustion, medication...

Sacha, I don't get the link between rugby culture (what the clip shows is blokey culture with some rugby players involved talking about tight pockets and beer) and what Veitch did to his ex-partner. Have any of the rugby players there beaten women?

You are drawing a random bow. Maybe we should all have a go at the Flight of the Conchords latest song and video but I haven't heard boo about it. Maybe it's because they don't play rugby.

Or perhaps have a go at Grand Theft Auto in relation to the death of the police officer yesterday.

And perhaps it's not out of line to point out that the media is hardly famous for attracting... well, shall we say, those of a monastic disposition.

That's for sure, off the top of my head I can get to half a dozen lawbreakers pretty quickly.

  • Hard News: So far from trivial,

how our charming meathead thugby culture relates to that

    Tony Veitch plays rugby?

A sport played on Saturday afternoons by other people made him do it?

They were watching a game of rugby on the TV at the time?

    I don't get the link.

The guy is a sports presenter/journalist (albeit a mediocre one).

The size of the payment for silence is probably more of an indication of the wealth of the culprit. If it was me, my wife would be getting my cd collection, our mortgage .... and then I'd be off to prison. Or she would after getting all Taekwondo on me.

$170,000 sounds pretty damning though and if the DomPost is to be believed the way it was agreed on and when does nothing to enhance my opinion of Veitch.

isn't it bad enough to know she was hit, and that that is wrong.
other wise it potential implies there is a sliding scale of acceptable violence towards another person. Which i am sure nobody here would even think was an ok thing

There is no acceptable form of violence but there are fairly obvious differences from an arguing couple exchanging slaps and then pulling back and walking away and one partner beating the other unconscious, or to death in a sustained deliberate attack.

Otherwise the court sentence for any violent crime would be exactly the same.

Yep LB, there was a distinct difference in that the English rugby players "allegedly" did this and that (that word was used frequently in the media) while in this case the DomPost is stating things as facts and that is a clear and obvious difference.

Thus far though it seems the facts can be stated as

    1) Tony Veitch seriously assaulted his ex-partner resulting in head injuries and 4 fractured vertebrae
    2) He paid her money as some form of compensation

The exact details of the assault and aftermath and motives may or may not become clearer with time.

Either way, what we do know thus far has me convinced that the guy is a scumbag and I don't mind any of the discussion on these here pages. I think it's all been perfectly fair given the circumstances and details at hand.
