I think one of the poster's points though was that we don't want the average kiwi running the country we want the best and brightest.
With all due respect, I don't believe our best and brightest are the majority in parliament.
The best and brightest likely do a runner either for better opportunities or in embarrassment.

And who would have thunk you'd do such a good impersonation of the more prickish end of the Kiwibog geek chorus? Anyone actually got some substantive rebuttal or analysis, or should we move along because there's nothing to see?
What's to rebut Craig? Seems to me like a jaunty little defence of any MP who dares to take a bit more than they really should. But that's ok cos, crikey, without them we'd all serfs to the rich and powerful elite.

Somewhere in there is the assumption that our representatives are making some kind of sacrifice to serve at our behest.
Bollocks I say. They are in it for the usual reasons. Power, money, recognition, influence, lifestyle etc.
One simple thing is all I ask. You want to represent the people? Set an example and behave in a way you'd want others to behave.
You want a nation of greedy hypocrites who put themselves above their fellows?
Ur doing it rite.

I've tried to be resolute in not moaning about the fair cost of representative democracy, but this case really stretches my tolerance.
I really can't see how it can or should be tolerated. It looks to me like simple greed if not outright theft.
Is there any way we can compare say, Bill English's actual accommodation costs against what he, to the benefit of his handy little trust, is claiming?

I don't have a particular problem with the salaries earned by our MPs. And most ministers would probably be able to earn a lot more if they were in the private sector.
I've always liked the idea of MP's salaries being zero with all relevant expenses being covered and a means-tested allowance in place to cover the necessities of mortgage/family etc.
It might move us away from the impression that political service is a front row seat on the gravy train and perhaps deter those who are in it, at least partly, for the money.
Representing and advocating for your country is a bloody privilege and all those who put their hands up to do so should be encouraged to view the role in an altruistic and humble manner.

To be honest, turning the current state of affairs around by legalising narcotics and having them state-controlled and distributed is just a touch too Brave New World for me.
