  • Hard News: iPad Impressions,

    topsy turvy... bunnies with scurvy!

    Most forms of commerce are pyramid schemes of one sort or another. It's not the form, but human nature..

    and

    ...it relies on endless growth in a finite environment. This is impossible, but society in general is happy to live in a state of self-deception about it, or at least tacitly says to itself, "Well, let's just ride this out as long as we can then"....

    what they said... this delusion continues as long as economists and planners think the planet and its resources are a subset of the economy/money rather than the other way round...

    I've also never had quite such an experience of feeling I have to justify a purchase with my own money. Oh well.

    Hopefully you'll at least be able to claim some of
    the cost as a business expense and offset the GST (if yer registered for that)...

  • Hard News: iPad Impressions,

    I'm still struggling to see the connection between large profit margins and exploiting labor.

    I have trouble with the disconnect from reality
    - take Tony Hayward being shifted sideways at BP and getting a pension of approx one million plus per year and other similar banking types
    - what do these people do that could possibly be worth this amount of dosh in perpetuity
    - is it their silence that is being bought?
    But those kind of costs have to affect the bottom line somehow, how can it be sustainable?

    Don't take the Brown acid...

    Using an iPad to replace the tape cassette drive for an Apple iie.

    Damn your eyes! Now I want an old Apple IIe
    and an iPad.

    Russell, that was just, ...mean...

    It’s an obvious solution in retrospect, but there is something very unreal and amazing about tapping a button on a multi-touch screen and watching an Apple IIe fill up with data — to quote Andy Baio, “that’s like WALL-E connecting to EVE.”

    though I'm guessing it wouldn't take long to fill up an IIe with data
    - Memory
    * 64 KB RAM built-in
    * 16 KB ROM built-in
    * Expandable from 64 KB up to 1 MB RAM or more!!

    those were the days!!

  • Up Front: Something Chronic,

    How apt that you should mention 'ladies a plate'
    as this is one of the events at the upcoming
    Christchurch Writers' Festival Sept 9 - 12

    Ladies, a Plate
    An Afternoon Tea with Alexa Johnston and Rosemary McLeod on Thursday 9 September.

    and flying the flag for Public Address – David Haywood is featured in a panel on Saturday the 11th called Pressed into Service chaired by no lesser personage than Philip Matthews (who is also one of the festival Trustees)

    and I know all this 'cos I just finished printing all
    the tickets - gawd this is such a small town...
