  • Hard News: Friday Music: Reduction…, in reply to Ian Dalziel,

Thanks Ian! Ah, I got my copy from Galaxy, the last one Dave had. He may get more but there were only limited numbers printed I gather. I'd approach Luke Wood via his UoC contact details.

  • Hard News: Friday Music: Reduction…, in reply to Hebe,

I gather they formed at CPIT/Ara Jazz School. What a transition!

Tonight, for anyone at a loose end, T54 who are about to embark on a short tour play at Space Academy (across road from Darkroom) tonight - support by Best Bets. The snappy tour poster I'm reliably informed was done by Luke Wood (who’s also in Hex Waves).

Seeing Ian's references to band posters from 1980s Chch has reminded me that I got a copy of the just-released publication of Un_stuck : Band Posters From Christchurch City Library Archives (1980-1989), an excellent little booklet with production overseen by Luke, and assembled by some of his fine arts and second year students at Ilam. All are annotated with the story behind the poster and / or the event itself.

    Quoting:

Imaginative new forms of music have often come hand-in-hand with equally inventive visual responses - correlatives in the form of album covers, music videos , and posters

Too right. Luke also notes the attitude of the time was that making band posters wasn't 'real graphic design'! Also comes with contextual essays and interviews with Ilam connections back in the day; a superb addition to the history of Antipodean Gothic Christchurch.

  • Hard News: First Thursdays: Light on the…,

Further to above, I didn't realise the Auricle re-opening was on until late in the piece. The newly opened-Auricle has relocated from New Regent Street to St Asaph St, conveniently placed between the Darkroom and Galaxy Records (it's the old Darkroom Gallery space).

Roy Montgomery didn't so much 'play' but he gave an excellent overview of how he moved from a 4-track tape based recorder to a fancier 8-track digital recorder to produce the sounds for his upcoming 4x album opus. Fascinating for the small audience present.

The wonderfully named Teen Haters then played a 25-minute sonic noise set (one continuous track) - cello and feeding back guitar – to round out the night. Another Canterbury Society of Sonic Artists event.

  • Hard News: First Thursdays: Light on the…, in reply to Russell Brown,

It doesn’t want to be :-)

And nor does Colombo St, well that stretch in Sydenham, which (as Ian flagged last week) co-hosted ‘our’ First Thursdays last evening.

The snow held off and it was an evening of conviviality though nowhere near the edginess of K Road. Didn’t stick around for long, scurrying off to before the Morris Dancers came on stage to the Darkroom where it was the re-launch of the ‘neo’ Auricle ‘Wine and Sound’ bar – and the opening night of Malcolm Riddoch’s On The Constant Dissolution of The Same.

The Same? Dissolved into..the Chills – it was a bloody cold night both outside and inside!

What a wonderful looking venue. I can half imagine the in-limbo-currently Odeon Theatre fulfilling a similar role one day in the Garden City.

Dark Space on Friday went down a treat - six bands over two venues. Because of liquor licensing issues, security was required but it was low key, polite and non-intrusive. Well done both venues for organising.

Everything I saw (before tiredness took over) was on the money. Most impressed by those Auckland lads The Situations (who reminded me in places of a nascent Mint Chicks) and 'veterans' Minisnap (and if the pic uploads, L-R Kay Woodward, Malcolm Grant, Marcus Winstanley, Mikey Somerville (on fiddle) and the beanie-clad Paul Kean.)

Russell, when you're down in August for Festival, be sure to check out Space Academy, a space enhanced further by its hosting the odd live event like Friday's.

Further to LA, I've come across this 2010 session recorded at WFUV (Fordham University in the Bronx).

Includes one of my all time LA faves, Talk About Good Times

There’s no way this ain’t gonna be great.

It will be a treat – as witnessed by 250 of us at a packed Blue Smoke two weeks ago. No covers, not even Reduction Agents, no need really this time around, just a sublime set.of the LA catalogue.(focus naturally on Absolute Truth). This man and his band are at their peak if you ask me and I’ve never seen a dud show.

James did hint to the crowd that he may return to the Garden City on a more permanent basis in the not too distant future.

Shaft …They’re playing with Minsnap, Nakey and others tonight at the Darkroom in Christchurch.

    Can’t wait!

  • Hard News: Friday Music: Back on the K, in reply to Ian Dalziel,

My memory serves me well! Great digging Ian to confirm that.

And Rob, yes, the 80s were the days when one could get in to gigs through toilet windows. And fake tickets if need be (my cousin did just that for Jonathan Richman at the Gladstone a couple of years later). I remember the LCR/Ballroom at Ilam had a number of suitable ingress points, not exactly suitable for those desperate young punk girls in short skirts.

  • Hard News: Friday Music: Back on the K, in reply to Rob Stowell,

Nice track, should be a good night Rob, I'm in...the event is Darkspace, 6 bands across two venues, Darkroom and very near neighbours across the road, Space Academy.

A pretty damn fine local lineup: Shaft + Minisnap, Dance Asthmatics, Nakey, Wurld Series plus the Situations down from Auckland - whom I note do a version of the Bluestar's Social End Product - plus I love their short and sharp (1:09) new single No Worries.
