I really enjoyed being witness to the musicians interacting with each other, tbh. It was a good night.
Was indeed. Bruce Russell was the wild card and I liked his story about him being an initial conduit for US interest in FN. Had hoped, with reference to Time to Go, Stones and Wayne Elsey along the way, we might have got a bonus sonic interpretation of Down and Around - but would have have needed 20+ extra minutes to fit in! Oh well, another time perhaps.

Did anyone catch Kirstin Johnstone's interview yesterday with King Loser on Music 101? A 'must listen' - interesting for the music they've made but also the inter-relationships and where they've been since the mid-90s.I couldn't as of writing find the interview podcast. Since RNZ had a refresh of its pages, Music101 is not what it used to be, how can I say, it's less logical.
But anyhow, a fair bit of interview was spent with Chris (Heazlewood) talking about the dark spaces he's been in, something perhaps some of us can relate to ( I know I can) and how he is close but not quite there yet in getting out - but keen as mustard to get out on the road for upcoming live shows. Celia (Mancini/Pavlova) was also present but on a different line, joining someway through - weird, Both pretty open of what they've been through. Not surprisingly, a lot of feedback was received during show. If I find it (podcast) I'll post link to it.
Can't wait for their upcoming shows. Let's hope they keep it together. Here's an interview (posted by Peter McClennan) from Frenzy (TV3) in 1994 - features a nod by the band to 'the contemporary blues men of Northeast Valley' - Peter Gutteridge, George Henderson and David Kilgour!
Also, another (short) bit of KL manic noise, recorded in 1993 with one Shayne P Carter on 2nd guitar. Not sure what the song is...

Great show, about 1/12 hr set from SPC last night at Blue Smoke. Just three piano tracks, I Know Not the standout. An epic 16 min version of Seed rounded out the night.Set list attached.

It’s fucking great ain’t it – just played it again now, ‘one louder’, in all its improvisational glory for the benefit of the neighbours! I was reminded of the Shayne and Wayne of old, From Andrew Schmidt at Audioculture:
Dunedin’s The Stones were masters of the telling one-liner. “We want to be God,” guitarist Wayne Elsey told the indie masses at Punakaiki festival near Greymouth in April 1983, before chopping out “a stunning version of ‘Fad World’, crammed with guitar improvisation.
Well, not Shayne on this occasion – though he was also the master of the telling one-liner – but Wayne’s Fad World was very much in the same vein as Seed. I don’t think that (15 min) live version was recorded. There’s a little more about it on Rob Mayes’ Failsafe pages.
Oh, and an acoustic version of Seed which doubles as a guitar lesson!

The Fall photos in the Press are now linked in on the The Fall online.
What I note on that same page is that in answer to a fan's question earlier this year Where's the wife?, keyboardist/singer Elena Poulou has left the The Fall.
MES says: "She's resigned. She was very frustrated with it. She's got a very German head on her and sometimes you've got to look at it objectively."

That Fall article is really good...how different the world could have been if Craig Scanlon had instead been that 'Happy Fall Guitarist'! He did last in the band a good I still remember him cranking out the opening notes for Impression of J temperance at the Ballroom. Magic.
BTW there's no Karl Burns in the extra pics. He may have been on a later flight, something about losing a passport...but he certainly made it in time as played the Ballroom and Town Hall gigs - second drummer and a bit of guitar.

If your schedule fits you may be able to catch SPC at Blue Smoke the night before your own 'gig' with Roger Shepherd and FN luminaries at same venue
BTW shortly thereafter, there's this across town a bit at C1 - The Spinoff After Dark - the Spinoff crew and Steve Braunias ...'with a selection of the best-looking guests from the festival' - Russell, that must include you!
