  • Hard News: This time it's Syria,

Military action should be a non resort. Where are the sanctions and other no violent options being discussed? Surely the NSA can grab all of Assad's assets?

  • Southerly: Continuing After A Short Interruption, in reply to David Haywood,

Can you suggest a rapid cure?

Judging by that wikipedia reference, yes.

    Lose weight and grow younger.

Glad to have been of assistance.

in other news, I see that the GCSB themselves are not being allowed to appear before the TICS select committee. That's hardly front footing anything.

What surprised me is that people were surprised a NZ prime minister could front up and defend their policies. Has JK set such a low expectation? Anyone who watches his weekly press conf will see just how he is regularly on the receiving end of hard and robust interrogation, especially when Al "the cat" Thompson gets going :-) As far as I can tell he usually copes very well.

But I also believe that concern about mass surveillence by global governments has moved out of tech circles and well into the public consiousness. Thank you Assange, Manning, Snowden, Swartz and the jornos that supported them. We used to live in horror at the stories that came out of Eastern Europe and the USSR about state spying on its citizenship and the abuses this leads to (we know you are guilty of "x", so we'll lock you up without the need for an expensive trial). That is still a deap part of our conciousness.

One robust denial from one prime minister is not going to change public concern about the GCSB and TICS bills.

Fantastic round up Russell. Many thanks.

weapons of mass destruction research, drug smuggling, people smuggling

Was exactly the line MED officials took when justifying (Labour's) Copyright Amendment Bill. The terrorists are always winning, it seems.

  • Hard News: A GCSB Roundup,

Coming in a little late. Thomas' presentation was masterful. John Key's constant attempts to misrepresent what submitters have been saying is dispicable.

I think he has been feed his line of questioning from the same idiot beaurocrats who equated copyright infringement with people trafficking, drug dealing and the illegal arms trade. It upsets me to think that senior civil servants in NZ can come up with that sort of shit.

"I happened to be watching Parliament on TV that day"

Snap. Not sure which was the most dramatic live, that or the Berlin Wall coming down. Neither did I expect to see in my lifetime.

  • Hard News: When "common sense" isn't,

I love this new site for Wellington cyclists. Especially the emphasis the videos seem to put on safe cycling.

    http://www.bikeeverywhere.co.nz/

Road safety awareness in NZ does seem pretty poor, I see that as a driver, motorcyclist and cyclist. But for the latter two would always go hi-vis on the road. And vehicles should consider using lights much more often, especially if in grey/blue cars.

  • Hard News: MegaBox: From f**k-all to zero,

The ad revenue diversion is certainly problematic. But consider this, the MegaKey technology is basically spyware and nasty substitution technology. It’s spyware because it will report on the site you are visiting (how else would it know if it was a top 100) and it could presumably substitute *anything* on your web page. Not just ads. Links, keywords, pictures, anything.

This sort of technology is not new, simply a nasty virus that Dotcom seems to be trying to legitimise.

Mind you, bugger all people clicked through on it .

I tried clicking through on an ad the other day, but it didn't work :-( Reading DomPost hard copy can be confusing.
