Some "fair and balance" to add to your Nokia / Microsoft gig :-)

Dunno. I am way less accepting of the status quo than I was at the age of, say 25 or 30. In some things more radical, in others much less.
This condition is also known as being an angry, middle aged, white man.
Which is not so aspirational :-(

Gareth, so progress has to stop just because Apple says it should? That's pretty borked. Consider this:
""we borrowed bits and pieces of our design from previous versions, a long-standing software tradition"
http://www.vanityfair.com/business/features/2011/05/paul-allen-201105
And Steve Jobs made very similar comments about great artists stealing.
In the end it is consumers like us that are being prevented purchasing devices of our choice...but that has always been Apple's way, you get to choose, so long as you choose Apple.
-
Russell, you describe Apple critics as "hordes of haters". I'm simply returning the favour.
"Everyone's fighting the patent wars, though."
Not in the way Apple is and that also doesn't excuse their odiousness on that front.
-
Speaking from the "hordes of haters" to the "arse licky lovers" - do you not think that the hoops and loops Apple put their users are just a tiny bit ridiculous? I am stunned at how you consider these normal.
And then of course, there is this form of "evil".
From which I can only conclude that Apple have stopped innovating.

It's interesting that the value of copyright material is $US 80,000 a song

I presume you never taped music "illegally" when you were young? Or even a student. You sure are paying now through your "Best of" collection.
For a real life experiment, try viewing some BBC iPlayer material (which you may have to parallel import through a proxy) and see how quickly you blow through a data cap or 10.

Sure - but in the absence of a legitimate way for their consumers to obtain Game of Thrones, they're the people profiting off the illegitimate means.
Relief, you were in satire mode.
For those that may not get it, its like those fucking window fitters and glass makers who benefit every time someone's house gets robbed. At least we make them pay, right?

Danyl, hard to tell which mode you are in. Satire I hope.
Given Netflix accounts for about 30% of US internet traffic I would say that ISPs would be interested promoting as much legitimate content as possible. It would be nice if the content providers decided to sell content to NZ consumers.

Hard News: European Horror Stories, in reply to
Yes, well that's because it was decided that "the people" should no longer have to pay taxes. Hard to keep government solvent in that scenario.
