  • Hard News: The Public Address Word of…,

I cannot think of a swear word harsh enough to describe 2011.

  • Hard News: Winning the RWC: it's complicated,

Ha! I was sitting next to Johnathon Clegg of the Wall St Journal article. After Piri missed his first two kicks he leaned over and asked "do you guys have anyone who can kick?"

I laughed and said "Yeah, they're both injured" thinking he was taking the piss. Nope. "Oh, well Aaron Cruden would be our other option"

Then after the dropgoal I leaned over and said "The answer is 'yes'"

  • Hard News: Where are the foreigners?!,

Wellington has been generally filled with glorious happy tourists every weekend. But during the week they travel around and see the country. Most of our cities aren't interesting enough for a trip of seven days (if you don't want to blow all your cash in one go). So the camper vans travel around (as camper vans are want to do).

Also many are just driving in to town for the game, but are based in Martinborough or up the Kapiti coast. Places that are slightly more "scenic New Zealand". Which is fair enough, that's how we're marketed overseas, so tourists come to see that. And also many of the rugby tourists are here to watch (and play) some rural rugby.

The big spenders of the Lions Tour aren't around because the money isn't there any more. Where the UK pound bought you so much in '05, now it buys you much less and the tourists don't have a lot to spend up. As one Irish supporter put it after having paid to come a very long way to a very expensive game and then head home: "Twenty thousand miles just lose to fuckin Wales!"

Bars along the route between the stadium and Courtenay seem to be doing well, though others are suffering.

  • Field Theory: The Cup Continues, in reply to Russell Brown,

but it does surprise me that Toeava hasn't been developed as a back-up first-five.

See I want Weepu in the spot, he's a playmaker and can kick. I think it'd be GENIUS! Of course anything we do at this stage (and indeed at any stage) is a roll of the dice.

    More Canadians (some shirtless!)

Seems like they had a ball here.

Me and my geeky American rugby-watching friends immediately started referring to him as "Wolverine" the first game we saw him in.

I thought Wolverine was Maxime Médard?

  • Field Theory: Rugby World Cup stories,

There have been some great stories here, with Argentinians hocking their gear in the era before pro rugby and the All Black curing a sick little girl may go down in legend. But I had to pick two winners and they are...

    Drum Roll Please

The winner of the Argentinian jersey is... Jack Elder for his fantastic kids and their passion for supporting our guests during the cup.

The winner of the All Black jersey is... Chris Bowden if only for the line

"by the time I caught up with her she had made quite a start on drowning her sorrows. Things progressed from there

    which made me laugh.

Gentlemen please click the email link and get in contact with me with sizes and addresses for me to send the jerseys.

Or even a return to a re-jigged form of legislative Council.

Just thought I'd point out, that while I love a good thread-jacking as much as the next guy. But it's probably not gonna win a jersey and I was hoping this would be a nice little "positive story" thread, a better place might be Russell's threads here http://publicaddress.net/hardnews/chill-out-its-a-party/ or here http://publicaddress.net/hardnews/the-ministers-brain-has-exploded/

  • Field Theory: Nous voulons que les Tricolores, in reply to Steve Barnes,

Yeah the Tab is going really well. Only had one minor software glitch where it froze on me. But I've had that with almost every piece of consumer electronics I've ever owned, so I shrug them off now.

It does everything I want, I just need to find some good tablet apps for it. The Marketplace is hard to find stuff that's built for tablets.
