  • Hard News: Staying Alive,

I note that Auckland City Council is running some get reacquainted or beginning with cycling courses. Also cycling safely workshops. P R after getting some heat after the Tamaki drive incident?
I regularly cycle down the western cycle track and then loop around through West Auckland in the morning rush hour traffic. I've noticed a roughly 10 fold increase in usage on the path so much so that I don't greet oncoming cyclists anymore as we are far more commonplace.
My red light running days are pretty well over but I do go to the front at the lights and make sure that I can't be ignored on takeoff. Non aggressive but assertive action seems to be the best policy.
Like it or not inner city cycling is not going away and some concerted education in regard of this should be directed at all parties concerned.

  • Hard News: Last Words, in reply to Sacha,

My understanding is that there is a line of thought in the Maori Party that various Iwi would take up the offer of these utilities.
I'm in 2 minds in regard of this as I view them as long term holders so that a portion of NZ gets the economic benefits from them instead of overseas carpetbaggers.
However I feel that Government ownership is preferable as the benefits flow to the country as a whole.
I can see the Maori Party voting for partial sale as long as some ownership quid pro quo was dropped in to make political capital that they can show to their voters

  • Hard News: A week being a long time in politics, in reply to Craig Ranapia,

Trivialising what news is by turning papers into entertainment and gossip is the main driver of the low end papers problems in the UK.
Withholding some genuine public interest information is only an embarassment to the Governing classes. In my opinion the insight and importance of the 'tea tapes' or whatever the crap they're known as falls firmly into the publish and be damned folder.
God alone knows our papers are turning into gossip rags enough already but not having the intestinal fortitude to break and or investigate important stories is not helpful to us as a society.
If the same scenario had occurred in regard of Phil Goff or any other party leader I don't imagine the line taken by National would include anything in regard of protecting the public from having their private suicide conversations being exposed.
Yes there has been a lot of flatulance and humbug from all sides in regard of this, but its value as an insight into our leaders thinking and mores has been suppressed.
I know your opinion on this differs to mine Craig but I'm sure we can both cope with that.

  • Hard News: The perils of political confidence, in reply to Craig Ranapia,

I wouldn't consider this to be an attack on the police but more querying why John Key felt it to be necessary to involve them in such a marginal matter that would have other forms of recourse.

  • Hard News: Winning the RWC: it's complicated, in reply to Kyle Matthews,

I suspect that Sky will run Soho for a period to get people hooked onto these shows and will then put them into pay to view.
A loss leader to entice you into their maw.

  • Hard News: About Occupy Wall Street,

The chairman of the Fed Alan Greenspan knew and followed Ayn Rand and was strongly libertarian. He publicly stated that one of his finest achievements was to kill the Glass Steagall act which the US had introduced to control the banks after the depression. Many of his actions helped create a long period of increasing prosperity, not necessarily equitable. He was a champion of banking deregulation saying "Why inhibit the pollinating bees of Wall St?" Giving the means for these 'bees' to develop vastly complicated financial instruments traded solely in the manner of a casino. He has had to publicly acknowledge his ideology was flawed. We however are now enveloped in a crisis for which he was the midwife.
Not all of the problems now confronting us can be laid at his feet.
Globalisation has wrought great changes, some of which have been beneficial and others not so welcome.
Overpopulation is probably the fundamental crisis that this planet has to deal with.
    Interesting times.

  • Hard News: Where are the foreigners?!,

Any fool know that Morningside is the place ;Tiffin for curry , Sake bar for excellent Japanese and then round it off at Winehot for drinks, cheese and/or oysters.
Tabou was the only place I considered to be special in Kingsland and is now sadly gone, all the rest can be quite variable.
