Person not running for office or holding any relevant position, lashes out to defend her sister.

    Public interest: zero.

Yes, of course I have read it and chuckled and mocked, but really, it typifies the worst of the reef fish mindset … “Let’s all pile on an easy target and miss the real ones.” Only the real ones win. We don’t.

I get the sense that her sibling loyalty notwithstanding, Collin's sister has been set up by a misguided reporter.

There is nothing of any information value in there and my earlier posting was more to highlight the lazy reporting and editorial standards involved than to knock the sister. You have to wonder at the "tabloidness" of both the writing and the running of this kind of story. Not to mention the perception of bias it creates.

That said, it was "unwise" of Collins' sister to get involved with the media. Maybe it's genetic.

  • Hard News: Dirty Politics,

Come on people. The “media” are hard at work drawing seriously bizarre analogies. It must take considerable imagination and time to come up with that one.

And today's lesson in irony comes to you from Stuff, in which

Judith Collins has been likened to Princess Diana by the embattled MP's older sister.

Hamilton's Pamela Cassidy says both women were "hounded" by media.

A bit soon for beatification, innit?

  • Hard News: Dirty Politics, in reply to Trevor Nicholls,

    Yeah, nah.

Certainly in terms of the dirt that has been exposed it is probably unprecedented but precious little of it actually relates to the election. It is about the modus operandi of the National government.

Don’t fall into the trap of thinking this only occurs during the campaign period.

  • Hard News: Privacy and the Public Interest, in reply to Cecelia,

While engagement is something ideally all political parties should do, the fact that disengagement favours the right means that this is more a problem for the left.

Even then any attempt to invigorate public debate or interest in politics will need to be targeted. There is a sizeable group whose interests are not served by disturbing the status quo. For every person who has been profoundly upset by Dirty Politics' revelations, there seems to be someone who dismisses it (for whatever reason). Some of these will be wilfully ignorant and no amount of reaching out or engagement will move them.

When I think of other protests, especially those that draw in widespread support, they succeed because IMO because the elicit empathy. People either know someone affected or can visualise themselves being affected. It is hard to publicise political issues because of this (e.g. "politics is a dirty business anyway"). There have been sufficient examples of silly, careless behaviour across Parliament over the years for the entire process to be tarred with the same brush.

If any campaign to shake our fellow voters out of their complacency is to succeed, it will need to somehow bridge the gap between what is to many an abstract concept, democracy, and their own interests.

Yep. I listened to it for about 15 mins and thought there was too much uninformed reactionary bs. It was either switching off or revisiting my lunch.

The fact that he hasn’t been sacked and discredited

    Well, publicly, at least.

For financial institutions, typically there will be an “Asian” centre (usually one of HK, Tokyo or Singapore) which will be responsible for book trading from the close of NY to the opening of London – which I assume is what he means by Asian time zone.

Not sure whether you are being facetious – it’s hard to read expression through font.

Most likely he’s talking about being the head of a desk that had responsibility for executing those types of trades through the times that the Asian markets were open before passing it off to the European traders.
