  • Busytown: Front, man,

Fuck that shit -- in this suburb, our next door neighbours are Muslim, the solo mother upstairs is from Chenai via Manurewa, and the folks two doors down are a perfectly agreeable family of third-generation Kimchi-munchers with a perfectly hale and hearty cat. (Sorry, Winston.) I'm dealing.

It surprises people I talk to overseas when I describe just how non-white NZ truly is. It's about time "middle NZ" (whoever the fuck they are) woke up to the fact. Perhaps we could have more than the usual parade of suspects representing the country on television, in public roles, and all those places where real New Zealanders are so conspicuously absent.

  • Busytown: Reading Room,

I'm not sure I approve of this conversation taking place while I'm away. In fact, I'm pretty sure I don't. For shame, y'all!

    (Damn.)

Yes, you know I'm not in the room, and you have this wonderful conversation. Not the done thing.

  • Hard News: The GST Punt,

$250m could help set up an awful lot of community vege gardens and fruit orchards - something that is happening anyway and restricted mainly by funding for the skilled coordination and negotiation involved as well as some materials.

My brother was employed by Housing NZ to just that in a trial a few years ago. I don't think anything much larger came of it, sadly. But the units who did get their gardens set up were very happy with them.

I tend to prefer direct interventions (such as aforementioned) rather than indirect ones (taxes etc), because they usually have a much greater chance of having the effect you want. The law of unintended consequences needs to be policed, however, and trials are thus usually the best way to test these things.

  • Cracker: Choons,

We get an enormous array of music down here considering how far these peeps have to travel.

Yes, especially when you consider that most of the countries in between get very few. The advantages of living close ( by our standards, but certainly not by European or American ones) to Australia.

With the sellouts, bands rarely seem to upgrade to larger venues. Why is that? A shortage of bookable venues, or is it for other reasons related to the business?

  • Hard News: Postmodern Banks Anxiety,

Bhatnagar's complaints paid off: the #johnbanksmayor account has been suspended.

Oh dear. That is very funny. Meanwhile, the fake account has changed its name to John Banks PR, to make clear the perhaps not-so-obvious.

Change Kyber Pass to: د خیبر درہ ?

More voter feedback: please reply yes or no. New '4wd only' lanes on the motorway, for the more influential members of the community.

    There's some humour there.

  • Hard News: Postmodern Banks Anxiety,

That second venn makes no sense. Overlapping circles share both qualities, in this case good and bad. And including the entirety of Nazis in a circle called "good people" is just wrong.

Key surely won't want to have a separate arrangement with him.

Garrett will almost certainly support on confidence and supply until he's no longer an MP. Having one less MP does weaken the hand of ACT in negotiating policy, however, and I can't see Garrett getting much as a maverick outsider.

Our constitutional arrangements are starting to mature and prove robust, giving lie to wild claims about instability. Even if they keep in power people we don't always like.

This is certainly worse than Carter and Jones, by a big margin.

Carter, Jones, Mallard, Benson-Pope, Peters, Bennett, Garrett. They all should have resigned from Parliament, served a punishment, and only then allowed back into parliament.

I still don't know why Worth resigned earlier this year.

As long as I'm an ape, I'm happy, I can still travel business class. They don't let any old monkey in there.

Whereas it's pack animals for saddle class.

Who would have thought so many of our local heroes of the right would turn out to be lot less Stahlgewittern and a lot more Sturm und Drang?

Mental health issues affect a very large section of the population. As many as you'd expect, on the right, and as many as you'd expect on the left.
