  • Hard News: Circumstance and coincidence, in reply to Pete George,

So if Fletcher was so clearly after a job back here and so highly thought of, why was a short-list not containing him drawn up?

And then thrown away by Key?

And then, and only then, was Fletcher on a new, one-person, shortlist?

Well, naturally he blames someone else...

A minister always takes the salary, but never the responsibility.

Thank goodness for outsourcing, I say!

  • Hard News: The Public Address 2012 Word…,

WOTD must be something to do with the on-line world---it's now ubiquitous and basically vital.

"www" (a word???...) - pages went from 2 billion to over 25 billion...

    "pirates"

    "privacy"

"IP" -- take your choice---as in address, or in the "legal" sense...

    "download"

    "broadband"

    I must get out more...

And Key is an honourable man. As Shakespeare did not write.

Rhetorical and logical meanings might be different.

  • Legal Beagle: Kim Dotcom and the GCSB,

Can you be both a foreign national and an NZ resident?

I reckon you can---so if the police are asked "Are they foreign nationals?" and reply "Yes" then they have given a correct answer.

Perhaps it's GCSB who have caused all this (contrary to what The Herald, for example, is reporting) by asking the wrong question. It seems they should have asked "Are they NZ residents?".

Being a resident and being a foreign national are not mutually exclusive, perhaps?

  • Hard News: "Because we can", in reply to Russell Brown,

Her original statement seems (designed??) to suggest that people have been on benefits for five years in one continuous block of time (i.e. they went on one day, and came off it five years later with no movement in between), whereas, when I first read it I though: but perhaps that means that these people had accumulated five years on a benefit by moving on and off over ten years.

    Good digging, though!

  • Hard News: Where do you get yours?, in reply to Simon Grigg,

I was with some friends in a glasses shop some time ago, and I was holding forth about the scandalous prices---I think I used the words "for a bit of bent wire...".

This brought on a huge, loud tirade of, basically, abuse from the shopkeeper---including the priceless (!!) "how much do you think the machines cost that make the frames---millions! They have to get their money back somehow".

It was very amusing, and a bit scary! Didn't buy from them, needless to say.
