  • giovanni tiso,

Mary Wilson and Geoff Robinson cost us money. In theory, Paul Henry and all those dreadful newsreader people make us money. Crazy, I know.

Damian proposed that it was a budget issue, and I'm making the point that the news on TV cost a lot more money to produce than the news on the radio, regardless of how much income they generate. So how come we're not producing TV news that is both slick and intelligent? Is Dumb News the only thing that will sell? Has it been demonstrated, and if so, how and by whom?

it will be creditcard gate for the next 2 weeks.

Poor old Shane, the scarlett letter of sex on his jacket forever. I did have sexual relations with the hotel tv.

  • Stephen Judd,

Point of information: RNZ ratings, coming in at number 2 nationwide, pretty awesome for an underresourced outfit doing boring worthy news.

I do think to some extent we are at cross purposes. I think it's perfectly consistent to rate TV news as crap, and yet also think that many of the people engaged in producing it are working miracles, given the constraints that they labour under, which prevent it from being even more crap.

I know it's hard not to take that criticism personally, but it really is a critique of the constraints and not the people. Even the rotten behaviour of the Henrys and the Veitches in this environment is ultimately the result of a system of selection pressures.

It would be interesting to find an objective assessment of which profession gets the most undeserved crap for phenomena that arise from the rules they work under -- I suspect criminal defence lawyers would be near the top.

  • Sofie Bribiesca,

Curse me and my high standards!

High, you say.? ;) Not curses, but with nobody being perfect, I accept that PH probably does some offensive stuff, that some NZers love and some despise. Some find him a bully, some find him ok. I wouldn't take him seriously but if I did, and was offended, I'd write in and explain how he is being perceived by me, in that instance because, just perhaps the organisation didn't think of it like me. That would satisfy me. I must have low expectations eh?

I know what at least one of the top anchors gets paid, and it's about the same as various salespeople I know, less than ad people and lawyers I know.

So the average wage is around 30K a year, what is this autoreader guy getting?

  • Damian Christie,

Yes, they get more than Geoff Robinson or Mary Wilson. They also appear live, in the case of One News, to an audience many times the size - in a commercial model, this counts.

I don't see that Geoff Robinson has too much to worry about in terms of a loss of privacy from his job. Lie-ins maybe.

@Bart - I think you are mis-stating my point here. I don't accept Henry is a bully. I don't consistently see him marginalising people, like you claim. I really don't. So I'm not marginalising that behaviour. To assume that he bullies his co-workers assumes they feel bullied, does it not? Have you spoken to them? As Michele A'Court mentioned today when RB and I saw her, everyone she spoke to on her regular Breakfast slots really liked working with him. The same goes in my experience, I've never heard one complaint about that - and damn, do those people like to complain!

Perhaps there's some point you can make about people not realising they are being bullied, but I don't buy it.

(Also, I accept this is obviously something that resonates with you, so please don't consider I'm being flippant here.)

Okay, and "talented broadcaster" isn't some secret apologist code. It just means I think he is intelligent, witty, funny, charismatic, has a great voice and livens up the show he works on. I enjoy watching him work. That is what I mean.

(Sometimes he can be a dick.)

Meanwhile, the news media is reporting on Tim Groser's unexceptional use of the hotel minibar, because that's so much easier than reporting on what he's doing in climate change and trade negotiations. Bah.

To quote Foucault: "what does it cost" for us to learn more about Groser's taste in beverages than our position in international negotiations on the future of our climate?

Not simply, how many dollars no longer accrue to the Government's coffers. But what do we forgo as a society when particular forms of knowledge are prioritised and deprioritised?

Or is the logic of neo-liberalism, that everything should be counted for dollars, so pervasive that it holds sway even over New Zealand's so-called liberal-left?

At the risk of defending Mr Henry more than I really want to, drawing equivalnce between his actions and those of Veitch seems a bit reckless.

How about his seniority and his ability? The fact that he can actually interview people, and his job is not just to read things? Do these things no longer count? Is it all about the blasted paparazzi now?

Oh, and I hate Google's new Caffiene Search Engine. The previous posting shows up already in a search for ' Foucault + "does it cost" '

I want things that have proven themselves with the stability of time, not instant emphemera. Google results turn up things I have written too often already!

Edit: here's the passage I was looking for, for context.

There's nothing dickish about not liking great amounts of social inequality. In fact, I think that earning ten times your fellow Kiwi is pretty dickish, actually.

If we've seriously got to that point in the argument, the bit where we just start slagging newsreaders, then I'm out.

Er... you're the one for whom the differential in salary between Geoff Robinson and whoever it is who reads the news on TVOne in the evenings now is justified by the paparazzi factor, and I'm the one "slagging"?

Also, apparently my slagging consists in describing what they do: read the news. Hence their name: newsreaders.

    Okey-dokey.

I'm sorry, but Television New Zealand is entirely owned by me. And the other citizens of New Zealand.

The last Government decided that it would not interfere in the operations of the organisation, and the one before that too. But as Giovanni and I have said in this thread, there is nothing that says that this is how it has to be, other than the argument that "this is how it is". I remember the argument before that, the one that National and Labour politicians made, and that was "this is how it has to be" (there is no alternative). Given the results of that decision, twenty years later, I think we've got every right to question the model we've been given. It does not deliver.

An argument can be made that certain salaries may have to be paid in order to secure quality. But that argument must be made on its own merits.

True. I was more thinking of the Williams/"where apes come from" type on-air behaviour than domestic violence.
