  • Grant McDougall,

I'm back in New Zealand, where it is cold

You Auckland softy... ;) It's real freeze-yer-nuts-off here in Dunedin. Snow on the hills and ice everywhere.

I was in Chch over the weekend to hang out with The LEDs (they played Lyttelton on Fri, The Dux on Sat).

Russell, they sampled you saying "Christchurch's best kept secret, The LEDs..." in their opening song.

Also, the bassist's Dad told us how he was a sub at The Star and knew you as a cub reporter.

  • Michael Fitzgerald,

The she-pee isn't a step forward for doing your biz standing up (great photo though) but evidence of the lamentable loss of the art of squatting. Not just girls either.
Going bush & such for 10yrs we continued to make all sorts of toilet contraptions in order to sit rather than follow the path nature had intended (squat to do No.2s).
The inherent hygiene of not making contact with a surface while doing your biz at a party is obvious after a 1/2hr.
It's like the USA inventing the ball point pen created for pilots dealing with/out gravity - a great invention and technically superior. All the while the Russians used a pencil.

  • Andrew Smith,

Yeah, squatting's the answer...just ask Jerry Collins. I think the AB's showed a supreme mental toughness against the Boks. With Burger and Skinstad showing all that is bad in Bok rugby and the gladiatorial one-eyed crowd I admire their fortitude. I hope they absolutely cream this 3rd rate side the Boks are sending down here and embarrass SA rugby. By the way...those she-pee bums are a bit dodgy.

  • Richard Llewellyn,

On the other, I thought: I'd be there again like a shot

Ditto - the discomfort of mud and rain forgotten immediately, the memories of being immersed in a 4 day mobile party town timeless, followed by the slow hitch-hike/recovery back to London.

As for the All Blacks, they are coming along very nicely. While the Boks had plenty of cheap shots, the likes of Flavell and Hayman can look after themselves just fine. Its the sheer mobility of our pack that surprises me, just wearing other teams down and showing the kind of skills and pace that backs can. I particularly enjoyed seeing Jerry and Burger renew their bone-crunching rivalry.

    Ha! Nice!

Fittingly enough, I played We Are the LEDs a lot on my travels. Apart from anything else, it just sounds so cool.

  • Paul Rowe,

I laugh at the Aussie optimism about their scrum, even after the AB scrum fcuking demolished the Boks on Saturday.

Al Baxter, Matt Dunning? Give me a break.

Paul Rowe, only thing is tat they’ve beaten us before when we’ve totally annihilated them in the scrum; a certain WC semi-final springs to mind

Good to see So’oialo finally getting the overdue credit he deserves. Not only is this arguably the best loose trio we’ve had (traditionally a strength too) but it would have to be the best balanced.

For gods sake, don't mention the war ........ yeah, if I hear over-parochial gits like Stu Wilson blithely and completely dismissing the Wallabies one more time I'll hurl.

Your typical Aussie sportsman likes nothing better than being told that they have no chance, and they still have enough decent - but aging - players across the park to sneak a result if we aren't on our game.

Peter Fitzsimons happily regales Aussie rugger after-dinner crowds with the story of how he, a few days before the 03 semi, encouraged Stu Wilson to explain in minute hyperbolic detail how little chance the Wallabies had, then published this sentiment in large font in his Sydney Morning Herald article the day of the game, which was then cut out and pasted on every single Wallaby changing hook by Eddie Jones.

Don't give them the ammo, please ......

  • Kyle Matthews,

Yeah, squatting's the answer...just ask Jerry Collins.

That wasn't squatting. Any ice hockey player will tell you that's "taking a knee". Er, but no one piddles on the ice in ice hockey, you'd never get away with it.

Fisher spent over one million dollars in trying to perfect the ball point pen before he made his first successful pressurized pens in 1965. In December 1967 he sold 400 Fisher Space Pens to NASA for $2.95 each.

A million dollar investment to sell $1200 worth of product two years later? Which probably lasted NASA to the end of Apollo? Man, that's not good business sense.

  • rodgerd,

Stu Wilson is a national bloody embarrasment. I spent several weeks during the last Lions tour in an Auckland motel (working out in Smales Farm) explaining to visitors to our fair shores that, yes, I though Wilson was a rude, obnoxious, xenophobic twat, much as they did, and agreeing that New Zealand's image amongst our rugby-related visitors would improve signifcantly if he fell off a cliff.

I laugh at the Aussie optimism about their scrum

That is making an observation, not being over-parochial

LB the Aussies aren't talking up their chances in the game, but they are talking up their parity in the scrums which is utter bollocks based on what they have shown so far. If anything saves them it will be the ref looking out for the weaker pack, which has happened before. I won't be happy to eat humble pie if proved wrong, but I will show admiration where it is warranted.

I was at Twickers in 1999 (and received hate mail from Brits in my job at the NZHC subsequently). I had thought that we'd calmed down a bit since, but, on listening to wankers like Veitch on the radio, it doesn't look like we have.

  • WH,

What a great test match. That So'oialo can play a bit, except when he doesn't. He had an outstanding game against France in Paris a few years back as well.

Its not cool that the Boks seem to enjoy hating on our captain though. Go the AB's!

me too - I remember seeing Julian Cope at one Glatsto he seemed so at home -in that completetly spaced out way - as the festival suited .Kinda wish we had a proper festival here - we sure have got the land and the summer weather (generally) for it . Big day out, as good as it usually is, always seemed a bit of an easy copout . The amazing thing as well about the Brit festivals is that they are so well frequented - always a sell out - even in Scotland ! Does make me miss Britain actually .
