  • Simon Grigg,

I'm not living in fear of major labels, no one else has to either.

neither am I but at least I make a stab at understanding them...

Well its not going in the direction you favour

No it's not going in any direction. You misconstrue, take points that no-one makes then argue them, then argue a few pages later against the point you made earlier, ignore logic, throw things and equivalence into the mix that are irrelevant and often nonsensical, refuse to ever concede a point even when you are wrong and make wild assumptions that have no basis in fact.

Rob, I respect what you do and have done immensely, but there are limits.

  • Simon Grigg,

of must have the last word.

And guess, what, you don't own this thread, there are others here. A post here does not necessarily mean you are the intended only recipient, although the number of people who've simply groaned and walked away has narrowed the field somewhat. When I say I'm out, I'm out of these endless circuitous nowhere sub-threads it always ends in, which seem to include you and someone else.

  • robbery,

but at least I make a stab at understanding them...

i do to, profit, its simple.
they make as much money as someone allows them to.

    in any direction

I'm pretty consistent on this point though. and for a reason. demonizing the record industry fuels the resentment that you yourself said has lead to the backlash against it by consumers. it is used as an excuse for fucking over music in general, not specifically targeted at the 4 majors for specific crimes against specific artists.

refuse to ever concede a point even when you are wrong

    That's not true, I've conceded a few.

    you don't own this thread,

No I most certainly do not.

You know I love your work, and even though I disagree with some of your world views (although I do understand what you're saying) that doesn't affect how I view what you have achieved.

can I use propeller as a label name? no? ok, just checking.

  • stephen walker,

it's been very interesting reading your comments, Simon.
i'm sure a lot of other people who don't post comments hold a similar opinion.
robbery's comments are, ah, interesting too, from a different perspective.
i just hope this circular flow isn't leading down the plughole!
    cheers!

as long as there's a good grey water recycling system in place...
(a bit OT, but did you do the sound at the all-ages gig at Mainstreet around April 1984? DoubleHappys, Chills and some others. never forget that one.)

That sounds like a loony tours gig.
probably doug hood. he's the guy who did the recording on the boodle clean ep. very talented sound engineer especially at a time when it was all big kick drums and nothing else.

best sound I ever heard excluding gigs i've mix were an out door muttonbirds gig at the arts centre in chch done by paul crowther, seriously beautiful crystal clear audio and it was out doors which is always difficult, and snapper at the university of canterbury mixed by paul kean of toylove/bats, a horrible venue but this night it just worked supremely.

  • stephen walker,

yeah, probably Looney Tours, as you say.
good old Uncle Doug! between him and C. Knox, they brought us some amazing stuff from a far off land.

i go to quite a few outdoor gigs in Japan (generally out in the mountains) and sometimes the sound they get is truly amazing.

  • Mark Harris,

Apropos of nothing much, yesterday's EFF email newsletter had some nice pieces:

Amazon Gives in to Author’s Guild—Again

Amazon’s Kindle has once again stoked the ire of the
powerful Author’s Guild with their recent addition of
public domain works to the list of titles now available to
Kindle readers. Lawyers for the Author’s Guild said the
Kindle’s ability to read non-copyrighted works is harming
the ability of living authors to profit from their works.

“If a Kindle owner can choose from the entire library of
human literature, with access to every book ever written,
how will living artists ever get read?” posited Author’s
Guild lawyer John Dewey. “The Kindle’s ability to read
works in the public domain is clearly a threat to living
authors’ ability to make a living from their works.”

Fortunately for living authors and the Author’s Guild,
Amazon quickly backtracked. New versions of the Kindle’s
operating software contain features that prevent works that
are not protected by copyright from being read on the
    device.

Earlier this year, Amazon offered licensing fees to authors
whose works can be read by the the Kindle—despite the
fact that no copyright laws were broken by the device’s
    text reading functions.
