Bledisloe Haka

  • Rob Stowell,

New haka at the Chch Bledisloe cup game, 2006. The game was almost as good as the haka! Had to put this up as it makes me feel good- also, I was conned into doing the shot from the centre of the field. The senior cameraman and director gave me a great deal of coaching.... and said it was for the benefit of the producer, who'd wanted this for ages. After the game, the producer was approached by furious ground and coaching staff, who asked what the f@%* Sky meant by putting a camera in the middle of the field between the teams- which they knew it was forbidden. Producer smiled ruefully, and told them (approximately)- "when the cameramen get these sudden creative ideas, you just can't stop the buggers."

  • Hadyn Green,

To be honest for me the best one was the first one against South Africa at Carisbrook.

No one (spectators) knew what was going on. When they went down on one knee everyone in the pub (Hope Bros. Wellington) went ballistic cause we knew we were in for a treat. Also Tana slapped Rico Gear (or was it McAllister?) on the back which I thought was damn cool.

Having said all of that I LOVE Kapa O Pango and when we were in France I played it to these guys in a bar. The laptop we used was playing the music for the place and so over the top of it came the sound of the All Blacks. Awesome.

Russell has a great story of a correspondent of his playing the audio edition of Hard News over the PA system to a crowd of several tens of thousands at a bull fight in Spain. Nice.

  • Matt Jeffs,

Thats the first time I've seen the 'so called controversial' haka. Stirring stuff. Makes you proud to be a Kiwi. Great camera work by the way.

  • Kyle Matthews,

We need some sort of law slipped into the legislation for the national stadium or whatever ends up happening, that this haka gets done the next time we play any team that complains about 'throat cutting'.

  • Paul Williams,

I freak'n love Kapo O Pango. I was a little disappointed they didn't do it in the second test against the French.

It was also great to see the French displaying such respect for the Haka; contrasts nicely with the confusion over on this side of the Tasman - the Aussie's have made such a fuss over such a long period of time they've only intensified the impact.

John Eales tells a great story about then coach McQueen encouraging the players to turn the backs on the All Blacks, they did and were thrashed. Eales now says it was one of the biggest mistakes in his career - another reason to like the bloke (although I've never forgiven him for the penalty at the Cake Tin)

  • Ian Hickling,

There is a very small group of Kiwis who live here in Barbados. Just off down to the local pub now to watch ($25 PPV) the Welsh test. Thanks for posting this - it' never fails to get our blood pumping for the tests.
