Helen Kelly should really shut up - she really doesn't appear to have a clue about the environment she is invovled in.

HK in NZ Herald today - "In this case you could be a clerical worker at South Pacific Films, for example, or at Wingnut Studios, and be deemed an independent contractor, denied all your employment rights and not be able to challenge that."

That is bollocks and she should know enough to know that - if she doesn't she really should not hold the postition she does.

I don't think it is hyperbole.

We do get to elect the people that make the decision on what is getting passed under extreme urgency.

BTW Vote McCarten if you get the chance.

  • Hard News: Anatomy of a Shambles,

Going through the usual - ordinary process would not have kept the movie in NZ - that is why as a solution it is ugly.

Simon g - I did really say that. They can do it under extreme urgency if the Speaker of the House consents - it is not as if coup d'etat assisted by a hobbit and elf army has taken over the house.

Who was the Govt from 1999 through to 2008 and what where they doing?

1999-2002 Parliament, passed laws under urgency 22 times and under extraordinary urgency twice. 23 bills passed third reading under urgency.

2002 - 2005 Parliament, urgency 19 times and a 78 Bills passed third reading under urgency.

2005-2008 Parliament, urgency 10 times and 48 bills passed third reading under urgency.

Oh I see – the sky is falling on my head.

To go through the full parliamentary process would have not kept the Hobbit in NZ - The solution is ugly and it is what needed to be done.

The mass debate in the house will be held under extreme urgency and will be to the usual high standard we have come to expect. I am just glad they are not coming to my "house" to get it done.

In any event Govts are adept at introducing late amendments at the third reading and often one suspects these are sponsored ($).

In a house of whores I don't expect any of them are saving it for an imagined marriage.

  • Hard News: Anatomy of a Shambles,

Simon g - WBs didn't mind where the movie was made - so it was not a gun held to the head - they would have been happy to take it offshore which is what they intended to do in response to the boycott.

It is NZ that wanted the movie made here and it is the NZ Branch of an Autralian union and CTU that held the gun to the head of the NZ Film industry.

The legistaltion is part of dodging the bullet. It is ugly but it is a solution that works.

    What was the alternative?

Helen Kelly - I wonder whether she was ambulance chasing or helping drive the ambulance of the cliff.

She is spinning so fast her brain must have fallen out of her head.

Mark Hadlow made a good point - "When was the last time NZAE were ever involved in your negotations" - Likely Never.

The Hobbit Amendment Act - "The Government will introduce legislation tomorrow/today to clarify the distinction between independent contractors and employees as it relates to the film industry only."

Likely to weaken the role of organised labur - unions - they bought it on themselves.

There will liikely be no right to industrial action when under what you would consider is a production contract - a contract per production,

Presently under the ERA there is no right to industrail action when one is under a collective agreement.

  • Hard News: Anatomy of a Shambles,

    It is good news.

With Employment Law changes some reforms were likely on the way and this has bought them forward with a wider emphasis. We will wait and see.

    The solutions make sense.

I will look forward to introducing the kids to the Hobbit in book and then in Movie form and then taking them to see where it was filmed.
    You can't buy that.

Can’t help thinking that some Neanderthal malcontents will have a go to protest and disrupt the filming.

I hope the agitation to Peter Jackson dies down and the stress to the production crew and others dissipates reasonably and they are all left to get on with making the movies.

NZAE - MEAA(NZ) I - Simon Whip and CTU - well they shoudl be turn to stone by their own stupidity.
