  • Hard News: Better, faster ... prettier,

Sad to see you're going from the Listener, Russell. I remember when that column -- was it called "computers"? -- started back in the utopian days of the early-mid 90s. This new-fangled "internet" thing will never catch on, I thought -- but I always liked the way you had a strong belief in its democratic or maybe even counter-cultural value. You were way ahead of the game there.

True, actually. I remember Jenny Wheeler telling me she'd had feedback asking why I banged on about this internet thing all the time, and why didn't I write more about CD-ROMs. I gave her a speech about how a CD-ROM was a piece if plastic, but the internet would change the human condition. Or something ...

Was it Paul Little who commissioned it? Seems now like a bold thing to have done.

It was and it was, when he was deputy editor. And as I have since gratefully pointed out to Paul, he had to talk me into it.

BTW, it's an indication of what's happened to freelance pay rates that my fee in 1993 was about the same as my fee at the beginning of 2008.

    Re: Ads,

Is it possible to get them so they are just served on the hard news page...

Tricky with the banners, no problem with the small display ads.

  • Hard News: New Sky,

Of course really I'd like to just roll my own Sky box, but in my corner of the business one doesn't just run off and implement someones crypto without permission, even if you know how.

    It would be ungentlemanly.

  • Hard News: New Sky,

Russell, if I understand this correctly, the cost to upgrade to HD for people with the current digital box, which is most people, will be $599 plus $10 a month on the subscription? The Sky TV website has no detail beyond promotional information about the wonders of HD. While I can accept that there is a benefit in having the HD 'mySky' features, and paying for that, how can they possibly justify an increase in the monthly charges? It seems a good old fashioned rort to me.

The upgrade cost if you have an existing MySky is only $49. But they're going to have to do something with those old MySky boxes. I wonder if they might become available at a lower price. I'll see if I can find out.

  • Hard News: Medical Matters,

The fact is that at conception there is a baby present. The fact is that baby is too small to be see and too well protected to be easily studied. The fact is that baby is alive. The fact is that baby is human.

These are not facts, they are assertions you make repeatedly and describe as facts.

At conception, there is not a "baby" present (although it is common for there to be two adults) and that is not because it is a special magical mini-baby "too small to be see and too well protected to be easily studied", it is because it is not a baby, it is a cell that might, if many conditions are met, later develop into a distinct human.

  • Hard News: Medical Matters,

The spike got going reading some of the comments here today, but fortunately, the replies from other rather more regular commenters were very calming.

I've deleted some of the more attention-seeking trolling, hovered over the button a few more times, and eventually wondered whether to get out the banning stick, but I've been inclined to let it play out precisely because of the quality of replies.

  • Hard News: New Sky,

Your PVR is that a Topfield TF6000 or a hacked TiVo. The Topfield TF7700(NZ) modded is likely to be the first off the block for NZ DTT PVR which is a little ironic in that Topfield were not given a chance in the certified boxes and now it looks as if the only certified DTT PVR box is likely to be Topfield.

It's the Topfield. It's a pretty cool machine in some ways. There's plenty of unofficial software that lets you do stuff with it. But if there's a way to view the recordings you've booked in one place, we haven't found it. Freeview will have their work cut out to make it somewhere near as usable as MySky is.
