  • Island Life: Songs in the life of Key,

Spending on relocating snails was done with SOE Solid Energy's money. The $25 million figure wasn't an actual cost it was the turnover (not profit) that didn't happen because of the time delay in coal production until the snails were relocated. The delay was caused by successful opposition to destruction of the snail's habitat under the Resource Managenent Act by the Forest and Bird society and Save Happy Valley campaign, not the government.

There is no connection whatsoever that I can see in comparing the two figures. It's a calculated lie made pernicious by trading on the fears of vulnerable sick people. ‘Heart’ indeed.

Thanks, Bob. Not so many words, just clear, concise and factual. Why do I have to start a fscking blog site to read them?

  • Hard News: Friday Fun,

I really must start a new, post-presumptive-nominee thread, but for now, David Weigel at Reason has posted the best account of the alleged Michelle Obama "whitey" video rumour, which pretty much leaves it resting with the fanatical and extremely creepy pro-Clinton blogger Larry Johnson, who isn't someone you'd trust to tell you the time of day.

I can see why Barack Obama has been unwilling to even acknowledge the "rumour", given that to do so would be to give it credence.

I suspect this is some originally some black-ops from the Rove tendency in the Republican Party. They just took advantage of the fact that Johnson is a mentally unstable fuckwit.

You can't blame Hillary for that of course, but is does rather underline the craziness of some of the pro-Hillary blog army/personality cult people.

  • Hard News: The Sutch Files,

true - I was exaggerating a tad - the thought that our scary terrorists are now travelling doing plays in europe does kind of suggest that the whole thing was rather overblown, especially since much of the evidence was tossed out

Er, there hasn't been any evidence "tossed out" as such, but the Solicitor General declined permission for a prosecution under the Terrorism Suppression Act. The intercept evidence gathered can't be used in prosecuting the alternative charges under the Firearms Act. It's not a judgement on the quality of that evidence.

John Ansell might be gone, but surely the lesson has not been forgotten.

Not gone, just working for Act. But I am still racked by guilt every night about what I did to him:

"You do have to steel yourself when the people like the Russell Browns [Public Address blogger] attack you. You get used to it, but I didn't realise I'd get used to it quite so quickly. It really stung the first time."

  • Hard News: Debating Clydesdale,

Feel free to continue to express frankly any opinions you may have formed about Mr Clydesdale's work. But I'd be obliged if he wasn't defamed.

    Sayin'.

  • Hard News: Don Paul,

A friend said she saw a gaggle of drinking buddies staggering along the platform at Liverpool Street all dressed as man-sized beer bottles. This was certainly an improvement over the chap behind them who had disrobed entirely and spent several lively minutes doing laps of the platforms whilst being chased by frankly unimpressed rozzers.

    Fabulous.

ever so slightly 'right-wing' or 'conservative' without the clinging perfume of sulphur about one's person? Just saying...

    Dirty sulphurer! Take it outside!

  • Hard News: Don Paul,

I left Iraq out of the comment deliberately. I think terrible things would have happened had the United States removed Hussein and done everything else "right". But they made so many monumental f' ups in the first few years that even trying to imagine that counterfactual strains my capabilities.

It's a really tricky counterfactual, that one. Although you could begin it with the rejection of the offer Saddam made to vacate via an intermediary. Even if they'd swallowed hard and paid him an exit fee, it could have saved a lot of blood and money.
