  • Hard News: How many children with cancer…,

Um, yes you do Tom. If The Herald is sucking John Key's cock, nobody told John Armstrong. His column today was withering, and much as I hate to say it is pretty fair.

Indeed. I'd further observe that Armstrong's column focused on a matter of policy that will affect every working New Zealander, and might perhaps have better deserved to occupy the front page (rather than page 6) than the "luxury lodge" story.

So it's actually nothing to do with the cost, Craig? Just whatever perception can be created by the way the story is framed? Sorry, I don't buy that, and I don't believe Housing NZ staff have to meet in a cardboard box for show purposes.

  • Hard News: How many children with cancer…,

    There's the rub.

    $65,000 / 94 people / 2 days = $345 per person per day.

But the same staff could go to a third-party conference or seminar in Wellington costing twice that and no one would bat an eyelid. It's not about the cost, really.

And again, when you tot up accommodation, all meals and conference facilities, plus transport costs from Auckland and Wellington, it's not exorbitant.

  • PA Radio: Nick Making Tracks,

How would an Israeli ska band do 'She Speeds'? Nick Dwyer talks about his new show, Making Tracks, which debuts tonight on C4 and sees him bring New Zealand songs to musicians from Africa to Brazil to see what they make of them.

  • Island Life: Ice-cold rabble rousing,

My guess would be that the police "know" they got the right guy, the definitive 'we will not be charging anyone else' seems to back up that guess. They just didn't have the evidence to convict.

They also hurt their case by being a bit too cute with evidence that didn't help it, and I think they may have placed too much weight on the original medical evidence, which came back to bite them when a credible alternative analysis was presented by the defence (the role of the expert brain doctor on the jury might be cause for endless speculation).

I honestly don't even have a clear suspicion as to who dunnit. I'm more in the how-do-we-make-this-not-happen-again camp.

  • Hard News: Bean-Counting the Beat,

I presume that NZ on Air were involved in the decisions about youth radio, and quotas in some way, providing information.

I was on an advisory group that developed ideas for a YRN. I was pretty clear in my head that we weren't being paid to lobby for a YRN, but that view wasn't universal.

I think one think that Rob et al are forgetting is that the NZ On Air doesn't just sit around doing what it wants. Brendan will be responsible to his own board, and beyond that to the Ministry of Culture and Heritage, which advises the minister. They'll have been reviewed and accounted up the wazoo over the years.

And MCH under Labour has not been shy about pressing cultural duty on the agencies it oversees.

Trivia: the boss of the agency group at MCH (which oversees NZOA) used to tour with a band.

Martin Durrant, formerly of Sneaky Feelings, is on the TV oversight side, too.

  • Hard News: O.G.,

Sure but I did post that link up thread for a reason -- sorry for showing my ignorance, but I do tend to "stereotype" people who get about in a 'White Pride' hoodie decorated with Nazi symbols as... well, racist thugs. Sorry if I've misread your ironic deconstruction of racist and fascist iconography, but I'm disinclined to enter into a dialogue over your couture which is, I suspect, the whole point.

I missed the point too. Was it "Hoodies are bad because some bad people wear hoodies?"

Personally, I've aired out my winter-weight cardigans and tweed jackets, the anorak has been sent to the dry-cleaners and the matching beanie/glove ensemble is ready for action. Anyone care to join me in Young Fogey Week?

Your crew could be Tha Cardie Killaz.

  • Hard News: O.G.,

Prime gives the same news content, in half the time, either first at 530 or conveniently re-screened later. Then add in CGW "News" for an enjoyable half hour of comedy on sporting topics, and an hour is much better spent than watching TVNZ or TV3 preview topics, cross live to interview a journalist about what happened, and then recap the headlines. Again.

Actually, the TVNZ 7 news hour is a pleasant watch too. You get most of the 6pm news reports, more world news, and none of the live-cross theatre.

  • Island Life: Ice-cold rabble rousing,

Thanks, David. I was going to write something similar, but you've done it better. There's a strong and understandable public urge for resolution in this case, but that doesn't mean the Prime Minister should start directing prosecutions.
