__But they all have American flags outside their stores.__

Yeah well, that's part of American culture we could skip. And it's not unique to recent immigrants over there as well.

There's a school of thought that the American style of integration has been a success compared to those of France or Britain. People retain a distinct ethnic identity -- often down through generations -- but also salute the flag.

Don: how do you find NZ content in the morass of Rick Astley that is YouTube?

Ah yes. All YouTube links now lead to Rick Astley.

Sadly, Rickrolling is yet another example of my son knowing about new nerd-memes before I do. I feel so old.

  • Media7 on YouTube,

I won't do this all the time, but given the hiccups in getting the video online yesterday, I figured it was worth noting that the Media7 YouTube channelis now online, and embedding the clips here. You can also get these clips, the full TVNZ ondemand version and the MP4 video podcast at the Media7 microsite at TVNZ.

In original running order, here are the clips -- the first section of the show, including the first part of the panel discussion, isn't there, so you'll have to watch one of the other versions to see that. Note that I don't actually have login access to the channel as yet, so the cheery little message isn't actually from me ...

  • Hard News: Episode One,

The zinger at the end about the paul Thompson and the offensive danish cartoons being printed was a bit gratuitous. Profanity in the usual sense doesn't line up necessarily with the cartoon images of Mohammed in a *Kiwi* context.

Depends on what sort of Kiwi you are, doesn't it?

I pointed out at the time of the cartoon controversy that avoiding gratuitous offence to readers was hardly unusual -- daily newspapers do it all the damn time, and the Sunday tear-out was just a particularly vivid example.

As for you, Russell, your body language was just a bit on the stiff side.

Yeah, I need to drop my shoulders, etc. But you don't know you're doing that till you see yourself afterwards and think "that guy needs to drop his shoulders and loosen up".

Might be easier to see what's happening no your face of you shaved.

    No.

Nice one, dude. I like it when you blog about your feelings.

And yet, he is a Vulcan. Fascinating.

If only Bharat Jamnadas hadn't been human-barricading me at the steps of Parliament, making me repeat the same quote over and over and signing those endless release forms for Asia Downunder...

Ah, the televisual media. We just fix it all up afterwards to make it look like reality ...

You should also be able to save the episode for later viewing by right-clicking on the above links and choosing "Save link as..."

I left-clicked on Part 1 and it just started downloading. I didn't know about those URLs. God, I love PAS.

  • Hard News: Ya rly,

slightly off topic -- but not very far: what happened to the idea of running optical fibre through sewers? It was talked of quite a bit in Europe a while ago, and I remember seeing a photo of a Swiss robot designed to install the fibre.
Did the economics not stack up?

Oh, so now you bring this up.

It would've been a good add-on the to extensive digging done round our way over the past decade by Metrowater.

Russel you might want to ammend your article to say lightyears party pills different company.

No, it's definitely Stargate, although the company name's different on that packet for the British market. I have a press release from Matt Bowden saying so.

  • Hard News: Episode One,

Its on the Media 7 main page, about half way down and on the right. A little picture with you and Simon smiling, with "Video!" above it. Right next to the Media7 blog link.

    Yeah, I just realised that.
