  • Hard News: Another Big Day,

Bush's budget is pitiful; it represents a truly massive increase in Govt expenditure over the time he has been in office.

The utter fecklessness of the Bush fiscal "policy", on both the spending and revenue sides, can hardly be over-emphasised; but remember, this was supposed to be its genius -- It wasn't hard to find conservative commentators to declare that "deficits don't matter".

And now, as you point out, there's nothing in reserve for conventional economic stimulus. It wouldn't have been allowed to happen in most sovereign states.

I'm just trying to understand your logic. enlighten me

It seems pointless discussing it, but I was describing an observable reality: the four major labels have begun selling their catalogues in non-DRM formats, largely because they discovered that DRM was working against their interests.

The foolproof DRM-locked playback device you envisaged upthread happened: it's called the iPod, and its success put its maker, Apple, in the box set, at the expense of the music companies.

The company they have instead put their weight behind, Amazon, has just announced plans to take its DRM-free music store global.

Meanwhile, EMI and scores of indie labels have their catalogues on iTunes without DRM, and eMusic has had its best year yet.

It doesn't matter whether anyone takes moral offence at this. It's just happened, and I can't see it going back in the box.

And, please, lay off stuff like "an industry that's been pretty kind to you personally". I think I've been very tolerant of personal slights along these lines from you in previous threads, but there's a limit.

Correct me if I'm wrong but were they attempting to control the mis use of their product, not the use of it, ie trying to stop people flicking the product everywhere and to everyone.

Except that they're defining "misuse" to suit themselves.

Do you really believe that music owners intend to begrudge you the ability to listen to your legally purchased on what ever music playing device you choose?

I believe that was the gist of the RIANZ/IMNZ submission on format-shifting, yes. When Michael Glading was head of Sony and the RIANZ spokesman, he tried to tell me there was no need for iTunes playlists and such, because you could get perfectly good carousel CD players. Seriously.

Do you not understand that the limitations you may have encountered were by products of trying to curb illegal use?

Rob, again, read the RIANZ select committee submission, particularly the parts about libraries and archives. It's antithetical to the public good. The material from the International Intellectual Property Alliance is much worse.

and per your article Itunes DRM allows you to flick the purchased music onto 5 of your computers and all of your ipods. how is that compromising your legitimate use other than limiting the platform ie mac vs pc, and that would no doubt be sorted at some future stage (quciktime for pc anyone?, wmv for mac?)

No, iTunes DRM works on MacOS and Windows computers, just not on any portable player other than an iPod, because Apple declines to license it. (I'm locked out of any content under Windows Media DRM because Microsoft isn't supporting the Mac.)

The main theme of the column was that a technology the music companies assumed would allow them to control markets actually handed control of a key part of their industry to Apple.

The only current competitor with any show of reining in Apple's dominance is Amazon, which is selling DRM-free MP3s with the enthusiastic support for the major labels.

looks to me like you're pushing for illegitimate use under the guise of having your rights infringed.

Rob, as various people have noted, you don't seem to take in anything anyone else says. It hardly seems worth answering.

I note the article was post this discussion forum(12 jan ish). have you changed your view in the last couple of weeks?

What on earth are you on about?

  • Legal Beagle: The Magic Number,

Each state in the Democratic process is basically the same – 75% of their pledged delegation is awarded proportionally at the district level, 25% is awarded at-large across the state, and 15% is awarded to pledged PLEO delegates (yes – the Democratic Party rules actually use these percentages).

    Good grief.

    This is interesting ...

The Wall Street Journal political market, run in partnership with Intrade.com, shows the Democratic nomination race in a dead heat: Hillary Clinton is rated a 50% chance of eventually securing the nomination, to Obama's 49%. Notably, the chances of an Obama victory have risen from 40% only yesterday morning, likely buoyed by strong national polling which shows Mr. Obama drawing within striking distance of Mrs. Clinton. A key question is whether his upward trend will continue.

Lessig was impressed by Obama’s commitment to open systems — for example, his support of machine-readable government information standards that allow citizens’ groups to monitor what our government is up to..

Yes, I thought the Lessig thing was very interesting. I think that's an endorsement that's worth a few geek votes.

California is a largely Dem state, and who they choose to run will be a very good indicator. Great stuff.

Hell yeah. It looks like it's all happening there:

In the Democratic race, Senator Obama of Illinois has moved into a statistical tie with Senator Clinton of New York; she had a double-digit lead just a few weeks ago.
