  • Hard News: The standing-still sweep,

Just got off the phone from Mark Jennings at TV3: it was the Sunrise cameraman arriving at work, seeing the police on their way to the raid, grabbing his camera and following them. That's why there was no reporting with the clip -- no reporter!

They made the call to just upload the clip as it was, as soon as they could.

It's all on at Whenua, Fenua, Enua, Vanua: Revolutionary Anti Colonialism & Anti Capitalism In The Pacific.

Oh, and some dude in the Indymedia comments reckons it's all a set-up by Dow Agrichemicals ...

  • Hard News: The standing-still sweep,

RNZ News says two people in Auckland have been charged with possession of semi-automatic weapons and molotov cocktails.

Meanwhile, in a classic bit of Indymedia dissonance, an invitation to "support the arrestees" protests sits above an invitation to protest outside a weapons conference.

the only armed camps up Northland way would be guarding their plantations....

Do they still grow pot outdoors? Man, there were some good things about the old days ...

  • Hard News: The standing-still sweep,

I was assured by some hardcore Marxist flatmates of mine - this would have been in the late 80s - that there were armed Maori camps in Northland preparing themselves for The Revolution.

I was told by someone who was in a position to know that there were actually Maori nationalists stockpiling weapons in Auckland in the later Muldoon years. Shockingly enough, the houses where this went on were in Ponsonby. I daresay they've been done up quite nicely by now.

  • Cracker: Stoopid,

I try to be as nice as possible when I'm on the phone with the IRD, Baycorp (with whom I fortunately haven't had to deal for some time) and the like. It might sound obvious, but I'm sure the people working at these places must just get call after aggressive call.

Quite right. It's one thing to let your tone betray a certain urgency or frustration, but even when it's getting bad I still like to drop in a "look, I know this isn't your fault and you're just taking the call, but ..."

Likewise, media - if you're listening to a radio show or watching something on the telly you really like, why not ring and say so. I can't tell you how nice it is to receive a phone call when I'm doing a radio show simply saying "nice show, really enjoying your tunes" or what have you.

On the money again -- always nice. On the b, I liked people praising my tunes even more than I liked them praising my interviews.

Hmmm, thinking about the ethnic composition of the NZ armed forces most military training camps for Maori are probably run in the open by the Army :)

Dude! That's the scenario of the notorious Political Review cover story where Chris Trotter proposed (as a good thing) a coup led by Maori army officers to install a new constitutional structure with a parallel Maori Parliament. Legendary.

__The Kelvyn Alp/AIF stuff is interesting in a survivalist wackjob way though.__

    Apology accepted ;-)

Fair enough. I've ended up being quite diverted by Mr Alp's continuing adventures now. Seems he's a subscriber to the 2012 Mayan catastrophe theory and has set up a super-secret financial transactions service for 2012ers who want to be ready for the forthcoming apocalypse.

Although anyone who can be mates with Auckland mayoral candidate Steve Crow, serial Maxim-letter-to-the-editor spammer (and one-time United Future candidate) Steve Taylor and irritating conspiracy nutter Jonathan Eisen is clearly pretty brave.

But it does seem proper to note that the police didn't take Alp seriously enough to mount nationwide raids under terrorist law, even if he does own a bunch of guns.

And given he's referencing himself today you can't really be blamed...

Ahh ... classic Wishart. He's headlined his post "Apocalypse Now" and referred to a "terror plot" in the first sentence.

The Kelvyn Alp/AIF stuff is interesting in a survivalist wackjob way though.

  • Hard News: The standing-still sweep,

As many here would accept the real threat is not the badly organised groups of nutters but the well organised body of power that is trying to take what little freedoms we have away from all of us. We must not allow ourselves to be bamboozled into thinking that we are at war, we're not but if it camre to the crunch I know which side I would be on, do you?

Assuming there is something to the reporting -- ie: that a group of crazy people have been training with military weapons with the intention of staging multiple violent attacks, molotovs have been found, etc -- then the police are doing what I would expect them to do.

I don't care if they're right-wing or left-wing crazy people, or "badly organised" or not. And I'm not clear on what freedoms I'm being deprived of in the police intervening to stop crazy people doing crazy things with weapons.

If it all turns out to be a police beat-up, then fine. But let's wait and see before declaring it to be the crushing jackboot of the state.
