Harrumph ... the CitRat leaflet just arrived in the mail. It's ridiculous.

    Claims:

-- That the Auckland Regional Council "is trying to enforce a new maximum rule for car parking spaces on new builds," which will force commuters to to park "outside our houses. We will fight being the CBD'S NEW CARPARK."

    - A bogus comparison of the "(lack of) streetscape design" of the Three Lamps shops with an open plaza in ... "provencial" [sic] Whakatane.

    - A repeat of the canard about the 11pm curfew outside Ponsonby restaurants, which was, one more time, a CitRat measure opposed by City Vision

    - "**Will the Great North Road ridge become the future slums of Auckland?**" From the party that approved chicken-coop apartments all over the CBD? Which now claims to be "pushing for the same controls now in force in the CBD"? The ones that the current __council put in place? Please ...

    - "Herne Bay Shops are typical of the lack of thought (or money) council spends on our area. What improvemnets [sic] have we had to Jervois Road? The trees which locals have had to pay for ourselves." You mean __apart from the resurfacing of the whole road and most footpaths? The tree-planting was a community project. No one had to "pay".

    - The Point Chev shops: yes, they could do with a freshen-up, so I'll grant them their demand for an urban renewal plan isn't unreasonable. I gather the Community Board has been discussing something of the kind anyway. And the arcade is actually improving anyway -- we have a deli!

    - Westmere: "How do we head into 2010 and still have Cox's bay Creek and Meola Reef as polluted as they are?" Is this a joke? The amount of earthmoving, sealing-off and planting that's been done on Meola Reef in the past five years is amazing. What exactly is the plan for more? (And I'd note the person who has been driving this in the community is CV's Leigh Kennaway, not any of the people bitching in this flyer.)

On the back, there's a map headed "What's affecting your street?", which points to "Future apartment slums" in Grey Lynn, "The CBD's carpark" in Ponsonby, "Cox's Creek as the Western Bay sewer" and, um, "The design of the Arcade area" in Pt Chev. Underneath the map is the legend: "An uneasy pall hung over the city, when will the Rate Rises end?"

It's all silly enough to do away with any prospect of me even voting for the CitRat candidate I actually like, I'm afraid.

OK, sorry, that was meant to be tongue-in-cheek.

    De nada.

I don't quite see how that follows. I just thought it was a cool story. Is it a fabrication?

No, and Sheryl was unduly snappy. But it's probably a bit odd to see someone you don't know declare someone you do know to have been "drunk ever since".

I'm sure it was pretty easy to bump into bjork pre solo career in iceland

I talked to her at a party in London once. She was in the kitchen, wolfing down chocolate cake.

It'd be unfortunate if Banks does get re-elected through vote-splitting more than any actual strong genuine support for him.

As I recall, last time he got in with the support of 18% of registered voters.

He subsequently declared that he had been endorsed by the "vast majority" of Aucklanders ...

Oh, and it does annoy me the way some of the local CitRat people attack City Vision over things their own councillors voted for. The Queen Street redevelopment was a magnificent example.

Now, the CitRat members of the Western Bays Community Board placed a hysterical full-page attack ad in the (somewhat bizarre) Ponsonby News this month, alleging that the old red-chip footpaths being replaced were (ahem) a heritage feature. They're not -- they're a piece o' crap cheapo solution put in by a previous CitRat council and they're falling to bits. And, of course, the CitRat councillors voted for them to be replaced...

The ad also advises readers to vote CitRat if they don't like the fact that they can't eat or drink outside the area's restaurants after 11pm.

This is absolutely deranged: the 11pm curfew is a direct result of the review of the liquor strategy carried out by the CitRat council under Banks. City Vision opposed it.

At the other end of the spectrum, of course, you've got the Water Pressure loons, who lost any iota of my respect with their harassment of a dying Phil Raffills, and seem to be as aggressive as ever.

I would go so far as to say the thing I like about City Vision is that they're not as weird as any of the others ...

I'd be really really happy to be proved wrong, and it looks like I might be. But, honestly, it's not the sincerity of his homophobia that worries me. If he's genuine, it still worries me. Because, okay, he didn't think gay people deserved basic rights, then he met some and realised he was wrong. Is he going to have to do that with every single other group? He seems... awfully malleable.

He can be a bit of a dick. But I seriously think that any comparison with Banks is way off the mark. I think Hubbard is good-hearted. Banks is just a creep.

  • Speaker: Silver is (not) the new black,

Read the 'Your Views' section on the Herald site -- some of those people really need to pull themselves together.

5 out of 10, too many mistakes from players who are supposed to be the "best in the world". Hopefully this is their crap game otherwise we will all be in mourning for another 4 years ...

Total rubbish! If they play like that against SA or Australia, they will get hammered. When will Henry wake up and select the "A" team. He is slowly but surely run out of games to put the best All Blacks team on the field ...

Boring. Brainless. My earliest predicaments are been proven true! This team will not win the World Cup. And has anyone ever heard such a moronic speaker as Hansen?

"Earliest predicaments", heh. Yes, they lacked accuracy and at times composure. But the number of handling errors also needs to seen in relation to the fact that they had nearly all the ball. (Which became a problem in itself -- they couldn't create anything from broken play because there was hardly any broken play.)

But really ... that's the most we'eve ever beaten Scotland by in a World Cup, and for long stretches it looked like men against boys. And, of course, the other two teams with a chance of winning didn't exactly look golden either this weekend.

I wonder if what was really missing was Jerry Collins. I imagine he'd have had a bit to say if he'd been on the field.
