Jesus-fucking-Christ, with friends like this who needs enemies? Sorry, Russell, you can believe Hubbard if you like, but I wonder if you'd be quite so forgiving if he signed a "silly letter" endorsing the notion that you and Fiona were unfit to raise your own sons? And then three years later all the prick has to say is 'whoopsie'?

I'm inclined to credit him because he said sorry shortly after signing that silly letter (it was the one that Ralph Norris signed too, based -- like most of the "evidence" put up against the Civil Union Bill that year -- on bogus research about families with same-sex parents) and because he's walked the walk since. He hosted a celebration of 20 years of homosexual law reform, among other things.

Unlike Banks, who claims to have reformed himself every three years and then proceeds to spew hatred as soon as he doesn't need the votes any more. Banks actually denied denied using any anti-gay rhetoric since the last election, only to have GayNZ bust him. He's either a liar, delusional or both.

That said, Alex Swney would be my pick for mayor, all things being equal. But it looks like he can't do any more than make it easier for Banks right now.

The only advantage you could give Hubbard over Banks in this area is that one of them has learned to keep his mouth shut.

Actually, Hubbard delievered a mea culpa at the GABA meeting, and essentially said he was ignorant and didn't really know any gay people when he signed that silly letter about gay parents. I'm more inclined to believe him than I am Banks, and it sounds like the crowd at the meeting was too.

I must admit that I was taken aback by Russell's claim that you can breathe by the LA freeway.

I remember being quite struck by it. We were stationary on the freeway, and had the windows down, and it was okay. I wouldn't like to try that in Auckland.

lets look at the pathetic string of anecdotes that reflect the prevailing consumerist philosophy of, I will pay, expend and exploit what is necessary in order not to share my space with others (which includes the poor and mentally ill).

81st, as far as I can tell, at least one of the people you're lecturing doesn't own a car and actually takes the bus, rather than just preaching about it.

My darling takes the bus. I don't commute; I'm in the CBD no more than once a week. Now that the weather's getting nicer I daresay I'll nip up to the shops on my bike more often.

But if I were to take the bus (three buses, actually) to Newmarket on a Thursday, that would be at least another hour my boy was at home on his own. His tutor's only in Grey Lynn, but if we bused there and back that'd be the morning buggered, and I do need to earn money. And when you're shopping for a family, walking back from the supermarket isn't very practical. The fact is, we couldn't get by without a car. And I suspect that, for all the righteousness of your post, neither could you.

I llike the idea of public transport, and used to use it a lot more when I lived closer to town, but the reality for me has degraded in recent years.

My SO drives the older boy a km or two to school in the morning, parks up and buses to and from work. I work from home and on a good day drive Car A a km or not at all.

But Auckland public transport just doesn't work for me in the middle of the day. I've got a kid at home and just don't have the time for the bus journeys to and from the likes of Newmarket, where we make the radio show. If only Mayor Robbie had won his argument for a pervasive rapid transit system ...

Now I'm just waiting for some scientist to tell me I'd be better off living in coal mine.

Lower emissions are OK by me!

I must say, that's something you really feel the benefit of in Los Angeles. They might be damn near living in their cars, but at least when you're stuck in a freeeway jam you can open your windows and breathe.

I really enjoyed watching idiot/savant totally own Colin Espiner's initial shallow blog on this issue. More power to I/S's arm, and a milestone in the growing role of blogging as a serious news source.

To be fair to Espiner, I don't think are are many (if any) independent voices with the detailed grasp of the issue that I/S has. That's why I was happy enough to point everyone his way. Espiner's bosses presumably expect him to, y'know, write something ...
