  • Hard News: Feckless Solutions,

Just a quick note to say that David and I have interviewed Mikaere Curtis about the action the whanau is taking over the Nia Glassie tragedy. I think his openness is a testament to the way the family is approaching this task.

The interview will air on Public Address Radio, after the 5pm news on Radio Live on Saturday, and I'll get it on the podcast immediately thereafter.

  • Radiation: RIP Aurora,

Masterful understatement - I laughed, I cried, I hyperventilated all over the living room floor and marvelled at the way Van's brain exists in a parallel universe from the rest of us (then cried some more)...

I cried too. And laughed. That was extraordinary television.

That bitch better get her skanky paws off my Munt, though. :)

Oh -- so you like the manboys now?

  • Speaker: Seven Good Reasons,

At the risk of seeming like a party pooper, I think the next step for Bill English has to be to say what he'll do to improve the situation for autistic children and their families.

National's rhetoric on education - and some of the things he has said personally - don't fill me with hope, but I'd love to be proved wrong.

  • Speaker: Seven Good Reasons,

He then outlined the alternative aspiration of a Good Life.

Actually, that was me, quoting David's phrase from the book.

  • Speaker: Seven Good Reasons,

Any chance of a transcript, or slightly longer abstract for those of us who missed it?

A few people have asked about English's speech. I'll see if I can get it for humans.

I agree with Craig Ranapaia -- Sarah Jane is the true companion. I'm still hoping that the Sarah Jane Adventures will be the series that I'm anticipating.

The one I've seen -- was it a piliot? -- was good; as good as Torchwood but not as good as the Doctor.

But how can you guys trash Billie Piper like that? You're being evil!

  • Speaker: Seven Good Reasons,

We just got back, and while it would be presumptuous to say a good time was had by all, I can confirm a good time was had by me. Who knew that Bill English could speak soulfully and well of the curse of the middle class drive for perfection?

Did he nail it with that or what? I was impressed.

Hilary Stace has provided us with our first entry for the "Stories" section at humans.org.nz, but I'll wait till I get back to my proper computer to add it.

The Autism Invention Trust people were so happy last night -- not just about the money (about $20,000 was raised) but to have their issues talked about in such a setting.

Point of interest: morning tea with John Key went for $1500 at auction. But dinner with Maryan Hobbs fetched $1600! Who'da thought?

  • Hard News: The cane and the strap,

This article irritates the hell out of me because while it's full of statistics, the crucial information - the number of teenagers in population, and hence the per capita rate of offending - are omitted. A 39% increase sounds terrible, but since it's an increase in an absolute figure, it doesn't really tell us anything.

I would have blogged this this morning if my laptop hadn't died. The rise in apprehensions for violent offending is real, although moderated by the 19% rise in the youth population since 1995.

But ... as the Herald's story eventually gets around to saying, the per capita rate of overall youth offending is falling.

But obviously, no one has told Ron Mark. Amusingly, this morning the Herald's story was bylined "By Ron Mark" ...

  • OnPoint: You're going to pay for this,

I wonder if you're overstating the case a little Keith. Car ads have run in the motoring section of newspapers for so long as there have been motoring sections. Hightly respected newspapers run travel sections whose chief purpose is to attract travel advertising. The thing you want to avoid, of course, is writing editorial to match the ads.

You may well be right about the motivation for the new lifestyle sections on the newspaper home pages. Contextual advertising works poorly against news and opinion content - Google ads were a hilarious failure on Public Address - and better against product-oriented journalism.

But those new lifestyle blocks are kind of invisible to me; I just click through to news stories, and it would be interesting to know exactly how well they do for traffic. My guess is, not very.

If you're running non-product editorial, you're basically selling the virtues of your audience. PA's major selling point is the fact that y'all are, on average, highly-paid, highly-educated influencers who use the internet a lot (you're also more likely to buy stuff online).

The trouble with you lot is that, as seasoned power-users of the internet, you don't click on most ads (we get paid by impressions rather than clickthroughs, but clicks make advertisers feel more comfortable with their investment). That's also an issue with the type and quality of creative delivered by agencies, who mostly still don't really understand how to engage.

But ... if you have the odd spare minute, feel free to click on an ad ...

  • Radiation: RIP Aurora,

Crikey! Don't scare me - I thought TVNZ had changed the schedule without warning (as they love to do) and I'd missed a show ..

Oh. Duh. My brain read Studio 60 as 30 Rock. As you were.
