  • Island Life: Just Say No,

Actually, VUW's Jonathan Boston has just made a vigorous and reasonably convincing case on Checkpoint that there was a potential conflict of interest here that did warrant consultation. That did occur to me: those are two very senior comms jobs likely to be in political conflict (Boston quite frankly declared that it would have been inappropriate in his view).

But Ms Setchell did declare the potential conflict before she was hired. It would seem that that would have been the time to discuss it, not afterwards. And DBP, well ...

  • Hard News: Brimful on the 45,

Happy Birthday. I remember using a Macintosh for the first time in 1984. It was owned by one Bob Black, who taught Logic at my university. He was an early-adopter, who also had a video disk player. It was all very exciting.

The computer that loved was the Mac I got to use in 1986 - it made so much sense! - but they were way too pricey for me at the time. And the first one I used was the old CP/M box that I used to enter all the copy for RIU on in 1984.

  • Hard News: In the Music,

I did not give my books to libraries, though my publisher had to give copies to some (on pain of death, I jest). I much prefer a great deal I have with Whitcoull's, the only store to buy for stock, in NZ.

Wow. It must be great. There aren't many people in the local book trade who love the Whitcoulls. We didn't have a great experience with them with Great New Zealand Argument - it got to the point where indvidual branches were placing orders because they couldn't get them from their own warehouse. Unity, on the other hand, were champs for us.

  • Hard News: In the Music,

I don't think Russell would care for me to elaborate, and without his approval it would be uncool ...

Actually, it's a complete mystery to me too.

  • Hard News: In the Music,

there are hundreds of libraries in this country, what if they all decide you should provide them with a copy each at your expense?

That would be unreasonable. But that's not what happens, is it? You're required to deposit one copy each with our two national libraries of record.

I'm commenting on this now because its offensive.

You seem to be the only one who thinks so. But you're free to say so (it would be nice if you could keep it seemly) and I'm free to disagree.

  • Hard News: In the Music,

Who knows? apparently not you Russell so why are you pretending to be an authority on it.

I'm not an authority, but I did go and read the law.

You're a excellent commentator on things internet and not too bad on media issues, but lets face it right now. you don't know shit about music, its a hobby for you, and you haven't bothered to find out much more about the indepth workings of it than getting your name on the guest list and drinking the bands rider.

Another pointless and baseless insult. WTF is wrong with you?

So how bout taking on board what people who have some experience in these fields have to say. isn't that good journalism?

So I should accept what you say, even when you're wrong. Um, okay.

I was thinking about bill direen in relation to this. There's a man who's work hard for his art, is hated by the mass media and most of his country cos they don't get his arty shit.

one of his early releases was a pressing of 100 singles. He's made squat from what he does yet is held in high regard by you.

I regard Bill as a friend. I've been championing his work for more than 20 years, and I've played his records countless times. I wrote the liner notes for his first retrospective. I have never heard him complain about legal deposit. And I have a copy of that single.

come on russell, you're being and idiot now.
you know full well I was comparing the creative sector with the things like dentist lawyers and everyone else with a kick ass salary. But once again you BIG error is beside the point, a side track, I was so COMPLETELY!!!!! wrong!!!! Boy you really got me good their, shot down in flames, good job!

Yes, you were wrong. And if you insult me or anyone else on this thread like that again, I will delete your account.

  • Hard News: Brimful on the 45,

So you'll be getting a telegram from Nandos then?

Why would a takeaway chicken franchise send me a telegram?

But yeah, that did always go down very well with the 12 Tribes people ...

  • Hard News: In the Music,

i'm not complaining, I'm wingeing, I thought russell had quite clearly established that any opinion on any topic which is not his own and he does not hold dearly to his heart cos it affects him directly is wingeing. I'm glad i've comprehended that clearly now cos it makes life a lot simpler.

Sigh ... if it makes you happier. let's say that you were, in my opinion, advancing some complaints that seemed mean-spirited and not very well founded.

The issue is the insult. not the cost of a disc.its another "fxck you" to a bunch of people I hold in high regard (they're some of your friends russell but then you always were a "guest list" kinda guy)

For goodness sake, is this sort of nasty cheap insult in every post really necessary? Did I give you a bad review in 1983 or something?

FWIW, I did get a +1 for the gig I wrote about in the post above. I wouldn't have asked, but Jim emailed and offered. I guess he was grateful for the time I'd put in meeting with him, helping plan the campaign, getting Karajoz involved, and offering a cheap rate for the advertising (which applies to all music advertisers here). I chucked in a free big banner for a week when I discovered the placement was available, and I paid for the new artwork myself.

I'm working on another little project to help local independent artists with sales and profile too. Hopefully that'll happen in the next month or two.

Have you ever wondered what happened to the stars of your youth mate. Apart from the few who still manage to hold their head up and do their happy monkey routine most of them are bitter about how they were treated. I can tell you where many of them are and what they're doing, and its not doing what they were good at.

"Happy monkey routine"? Is there anyone else you'd like to pour anonymous excrement on? Frankly, if your behaviour here is indicative of your conduct in the real world, I'm not terribly surprised you're struggling. Pull up, dude.
