I noted a little while ago that a suburban volcano in Auckland would take out Auckland airport for weeks or months. Hopefully won't coincide with Rugby World Cup 2011.

Pepperspray, batons, dogs would have all been safer options, but it didn't blow up, so it was a success, right?This report says he was clear of petrol before they tasered him.

Maybe we should organise an "insurance" system where "patients" pick the Docs rather than the Docs pick the patients?
I think in our system it's more the Docs pick the Docs isn't it ?

Glenn: that's almost 100% reversed from the truth. In fact the NHS in Britain was inspired by such societies, eg the Tredegar Medical Aid Society.
BUPA was more what I had in mind rather than the NHS itself.
But yes, I guess I was thinking of more recent local history

Co-operative self-help organisations are one of the classic examples socialists and anarchists use to illustrate how voluntary organisations of workers can create powerful, useful systems without the need for capitalist institutions.
Well that's one rose-tinted way of looking at it. In the case of medical insurance the "co-ops" have tended to be instigated by members of the medical profession to effectively create a private market for their services in the face of otherwise becoming public servants in the public health system.

So, this morning in the Letters to the Herald we have Josh Arbuy and Steven Joyce. One arguing the council will have no control over the CCO and the other the exact opposite.
Which is it ? I'm confused.

I'm not 100% sure you are right on the claw back. In theory, thats how it works, however it's (usually) fairly easy to not have it clawed back, if you buy to hold, not buy to flip.
I thought the flip/hold rule was only applied to the capital gain. The depreciation clawback is supposed to be irrespective of the flip/hold rule ?
But as Keith points out it's fairly straightforward to get a valuation from a friendly valuer at time of sale indicating that the increase in value has all come from the land not the building, and in most cases that wouldn't actually be too far from the truth. esp. in AKL
I'd like to see some figures on how much depn is actually clawed back, I bet it's a small % of what is claimed as deductible.

Discussion on teh wireless this morning with Dave Walden (sp?) Advertising guru saying it's going to be hard selling advertising because the audience size is going to be very difficult to predict without exclusivity of broadcast.
