  • Hard News: The Sound of Music,

    My Favourite Things...
Shame we didn't have a current RWC Minister (aka 'Killer MC Cully') engaged enough to micromanage the music as well, to ensure it showcased NZ talent and that the 'needle money' stayed here.
Hopefully Jordan Luck and the Exponents will get a small cash injection out of it all, but don't start me on the Feelers and their cover version...

To be fair I suspect Dean Kozanic has been voicing these sentiments since they were initially excluded, but photographers usually don't get a word in the papers, just a byline. I cynically think that it probably only now serves his masters' purposes to publicly air them, after trying all other avenues...

Though it seems to have resulted in new inner city footage on
    The Press website today...

    I won't see Becker's shots as I don't do the FaceBook thang...

    Colonel clinker?

    Werner Klemperer’s diaries

I think you mean Victor Klemperer - he was Werner's second cousin.*

His diaries detailing his life under successive German states — the German Empire, the Weimar Republic, Nazi Germany and the German Democratic Republic were published in 1995. An English translation has appeared in three volumes: I Will Bear Witness (1933 to 1941), To The Bitter End (1942 to 1945) and The Lesser Evil (1945 to 1959). His recollections on the Third Reich have since become standard sources

    * Werner did write the introduction to the book The German American Family Album

  • Hard News: Dropping the Bomber,

    By the Cords of Billroth!

This post opened with Bradbury’s banning.
How the hell did we wind up here via Tauranga?

I suggest that it is a sequence of events that appears to prove the interconnectedness of everything… here is is my casual causal chain:
Bradbury vent his spleen (creating a monoblast ); this then caused a rupture in the nation’s psychic spleen, resulting in monocyte (white cell) flight from the perceived red pulp to the aid of a nonexistent inflammation; thus depleting the reserve of emergency immune response ability; the Monocytes finding nothing to fix and confused by the panic signals broadcast from Radio New Zealand’s cell towers have morphed into macrophages and mistakenly attacked one of the nearest organs; the kidney – causing Renal failure* and allowing toxins into the surrounding environment!

*this coupled with the nation’s almost singleminded focus on the groin fear that we may lose the Rugby World Cup has morphicly resonated the mixed signals into the ether, resulting in a nation’s beaches back in black, a noted ex-all black Jonah Lomu’s renal problems and a ship called Rena beached and breached like a whale – it has to be inter-related doesn’t it?

    or…
…it could just be about an unwieldy ship of state heading right instead of left, hitting interference and the panels taking a beating….

    or…
…it could be because of the multipurpose use of existing threads, resulting from the dearth of new and relevant blogs probably due to the moderators and blog-writers being busy elsewhere, as happens in modern life – though it does raise the idea of a few general topic-centric threads being created to keep it all together or summat similar….

    [as noted by others above...]

    an absence of social spirit...
I gotta say that Ngati Whatua have an odd way of showcasing Maori culture - by banning the media (well at least TV1) from their multi million 11 day extravaganza - which means they are excluding the rest of the country who aren't tourists in Auckland, and have contributed to its construction. I think it would've served them better to rise above their critics and shared it with the nation. Just sayin'

  • Hard News: Angry and thrilled about Arie,

    a broken record...
Not sure which thread to put this on...
Maybe we need some specific disaster threads to keep things all together?

Staff photographer, Dean Kozanic, has a great piece in the Press today about the exclusion of Media from the Chchch Central City Red Zone - makes many good points, methinks...

The relationship between media and those who find themselves in a position of authority is an often troubled work space.
The path information takes between the two can become a one-way street, with authority using silence and bully tactics to keep control of whatever it believes is not in the public interest.
But, in the same way that every politician remembers the photographer's name in election year, when the media is needed to convey authority's desire to give or receive information the lights are all green.
The adage that defines news as something that someone somewhere does not want published - everything else is advertising - is brutally true. In the case of the more serious stories, if offence is not taken by someone then the truth is probably missing.

Large volcanic eruptions are taking place on the sea floor 5km from the island of El Hierro in The Canary Islands, if I was on the eastern seaboard of the USA, I might be thinking of visiting friends well inland... or at least keeping a weather eye on this event - y'know as opposed to a 'wether eye' where ya just hit the high notes and struggle to be herd, in the choir of sheep out on the 'tenor reef'...
