  • Island Life: Hunting Squirrels,

To return to David Slack's original question...

Can I add: That we're not stuck in an illegal war in Iraq.

I recall that (former pacifist) Don Brash and numerous current National candidates said that we should join the US invasion in order to support our "traditional allies" (and, hey, we might get a US free trade deal in exchange for some NZ corpses).

Perhaps a "how NZ would look if National had been the government instead of Labour" advertisement. Anyone remember the unemployment, government debt, and disastrous economy under Bolger/Shipley?

  • Southerly: Five Simple Ingredients for a…,

Glad you liked the story, chaps. I'm just back on the internets after a long migration from Southland to Wellington. Very, very, long. Wellington feels like New York after five months in Riverton.

I shall be visiting Christchurch for a few weeks later in the year, so will be sure to check out the brews at the staff club.

Incidentally, on the subject of stories, I'm just blocking out a piece about some children who accidentally kill their baby-sitter. It's giving me an anxiety attack writing it -- heaven knows what it'll do to kids. Heh heh.

  • Cracker: Fillerup,

Having spent a bit of time in countries where scooters are the rule rather than the exception, the downside is inner-city air thick with two-stroke [engine emissions]...

As long as they're like your scooter then this won't be a problem. I assume you have the Vespa GT200? That's a four-stroke single-cylinder quad-valve motor with some good thermodynamic design and a stupid acronym: L.E.AD.E.R. (Low Emissions ADvanced Engine Range).

And, yes, my honours dissertation involved the analysis of two-stroke motorcycle engines. I'm mostly better, but occasionally I have a relapse like this one...

That will be my singing, Jackie -- it often has that effect on people. In my defence, I'm playing the song in completely the wrong key for my voice on account of the fact that neither Bob nor I know how to play B#m on the ukulele.

    Dude, Beard. Hmmm.

Yeah, it's a new dictum of Russell's. He says that all the male PA writers have to grow beards like him so as to present a "unified corporate image". Frankly it's a bit much. He seems like such a nice guy -- but I'm telling you, underneath the façade, Russell's as bad as the Taliban.

I have a Deering that looks just like the one in that vid. I think I'm going to go have a hack at Wildwood Flower RIGHT NOW.

May I also recommend the Carter Family's original cool 4/4 version of "Are you lonesome?". It's one of Bob's favourites and I suspect that it would sound excellent on a banjo. As an added bonus it's in G, which will be handy for that drone string of yours.

  • Southerly: Nine Months of Baby Hell,

    Absolutely uncanny!

Bob also loves this tune, and indeed gets it most nights (on the guitar, not banjo).

In the eternal one-up-manship that is parenthood, I can reveal that Bob is not only a music listener, but also a talented ukuleleist. The song is Malvina Reynolds "We Hate to See them Go" (in case you don't recognize it).

Thanks also for the tip RE: the Carolina Chocolate Drops. I shall run them past Bob and see how he likes them.

P.S. We've actually successfully moved him onto tolerating 'They Might Be Giants'. Thank youse God!

  • Hard News: Debating Clydesdale,

And I'd point out that the Cook Islands, Niue, and Tokelau are all part of the Realm of New Zealand. So people from these places are all New Zealand citizens and have every right to come here.

By the way, if you ever want to feel depressed about being a New Zealander, then read a history on our nation's (mis)management of our former territories.

  • Speaker: A Trip to the Bird's Nest,

Very nice work -- your writing talents managed to lure me into reading about a subject in which I otherwise have zero interest!

I subscribe to the Run Only When Chased school of sports thought.

It's great to know the technical name for this exercise regime. I've been a devotee for years.

I think maybe we saw a flicker of a wave on Saturday at around 9 am.

If you get a chance to go to Stewart Island just do it, really has fantastic bird life and a nice feel to the place

Your report has galvanized us into action. We're booking tickets for Monday/Tuesday next week.

Yep, that's Pete Sinclair doing the intro...

Shouldn't the Pete Sinclair appearance have been filed under Jolisa's thread?

You can actually hire antique rowing boats from the Antigua boatsheds these days (along with canoes and paddle-boats). I see Jolisa as a traditional rowing-boat type of person -- hope she doesn't catch a crab.
